well.. ketsui and progear are the only cave shmups without sequels.. and afaik everyone hated developing progear so i wouldnt put THAT much weight behind his statement :P

ed: aside from dangun and guwange ofcourse but there are copyright problems with those since they were with Atlus.. right?.. or maybe not.. i dont know..

The major complaints about Progear's development in that interview were about the CPS hardware and not about the game itself. Ikeda doesn't think horizontal is that great for bullet hell style games but I don't see anything that suggests they had a horrible time developing the game itself, so I'm not sure where people keep getting this idea.

That's not an accurate translations As usual w/ IKD, he's having a laugh here. Don't hold your breath for this (although logic would tell me otherwise). I don't have time to read the whole thing to get the context, but he blabs something about a delusional future, and at the end "it's cut". He makes no mention of his games of late being sequels.
Progear
Was apparently a nightmare to develop. Even the artists had a rough time due to the CPS2's elongated pixels.
but I don't see anything that suggests they had a horrible time developing the game itself
IKD: "It was a learning experience.". That doesn't sound very fun to me. Capcom also cut some Inoue's designs. There's at least one in the Progear-central Arcadia issue.

The impression I got was more that the CPS2 and Capcom were the pain in the ass and less the actual game design itself, but that's just what I got from that interview. I mean if they had developed the same game on their usual hardware by themselves, would they have a much better opinion of the thing?

That's what I got as well, but I think that qualifes for "the game was difficult to develop". The hori thing as well was a challenge, I recall.
