what great 2d shooters am i missing?

Post by Xonatron »

i've learned a lot from these boards over the past few months, and one thing i've learned is there's a lot of shooters out there i have never played, some seem like fan favorites.

here's a list of my favorite 2d shooters, let me know what games most stand out that i'm missing:

- gaiares (genesis)
- thunder force 2/3/4 (genesis)
- thunder force 5 (ps1)
- raiden I and II (arcade)
- task force harrier (arcade)
- r-type I/II/III (arcade, snes)
- super r-type (snes)
- r-type delta (ps1)
- gradius I/II (NES)
- lifeforce (NSE)
- gradius III (SNES)
EDIT:
- ikaruga (xbox, gamecube)
- einhander (ps1)
- duality: zf :)

games i want to play:

- raiden dx (arcade)
- raiden fighers jet series (arcade)
- some bullet hell shooter to see what they are all about

I'd expand on the OBVIOUS Dodonpachi to "all cave games"

Well, my friend, you have come to the right place for recommendations. We love to do that here.

In terms of Bullet Hell games, you want to go with Cave. Recommended games would be:

DoDonPachi- MAME and Japanese PS1(also on Japanese Saturn, but it's a bad version)
ESP Ra.De.- MAME
Guwange- MAME

Non bullet hell games:

Gradius V- PS2
Radiant Silvergun- Japanese Saturn(obscenely expensive, but still good stuff)
Galactic Attack- Saturn(also known as Gun Lock on MAME)
G Darius- PS1
Gradius Gaiden- Japanese PS1, PSP
Battle Garegga- MAME, Japanese Saturn
Soukyugurentai- Japanese Saturn
R-Type Delta- PS1

There's plenty more, but those are my favorites.

ESP Galuda for the Japanese PS2 is a good choice too. However, you can really play a lot of great games for free on MAME. Give it a look.

Yeah. The PS1 version is great, but it's like 80 to 100 bucks.

THUNDER DRAGON II. (how can we forget of this one? =P)

That or Darius Gaiden. Saturn version is amazing and probably one of the cheapest you can find (plus it has a special autofire function that will make your life easier compared to the arcade version you can play with MAME). Same deal with Ray Force/Layer Section/Gunlock. Oh, and the discs contain redbook audio so you are pretty much getting 2 discs in 1.

Actually... Where's the voting thread for the top 25 shooters of all time? I could just copy/paste my list =P

Yes.

Is it the arcade? Not quite, but unless you're a Nick Rox "OMG THE SHADOWS AREN'T BLUE!"-type anal gamer, you'll enjoy playing it. It's a good game, and has a different feel from the arcade version.

Cave are awesome and all, but games like Strikers 1999 and Armed Police Batrider are undeniably 'bullet hell', just in a different, equally awesome way. Try them, you might love them :D

Ignore these Cave fanboys and go play Raiden Fighters Jet as soon as you possibly can.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

What, no lovin' for Capcom's Area 88/U.N. Squadron (released on the CPS, and later consoles/home computers)? I remember first playing it on the Amstrad CPC464...

Also, 飛翔鮫/Flying Shark/Sky Shark. Classic oldskool Toaplan goodness!

(Both are on MAME fwiw).

Buying it THE DAY it's released on Xbox LIVE, whenever that is. All I have access to is a teaser video on there so far. :(

Do just that.

I'll add Psyvariar 2 to the list - not too hard, but not too easy... And Progear if you please...

Other than that, much of what I love has been added already.

Has anyone mentioned DoDonPachi yet?

I assume this is research for your game in the Development board. Shoot the Bullet isn't amazing in itself, but is condensed awesome as far as bullet patterns go.

Both Psikyo and Raizing/8ing's flavors of danmaku with Strikers 1999 (aka Strikers 1945 III in the USA) and Armed Police Batrider are nothing to sneeze at. Well worth giving them both a spin indeed. APB does include many numerous ways/options to play it, giving the player some fun and unique ways to play for score, chaining or just plain casual mindless shooting. Not to mention the cool ending stories for the myriad of characters to choose from. ^_~
