i like art
I don't mind so much pre-rendered art if everything fits (i.e. care was given to ensure the overall look is seamless and not just the highest possible detailed graphics thrown together in a soup) and the art style is one that I actually like (then it becomes a matter of taste, not method)
attempts to spice up 3d graphics like Okami & Wind Waker are pretty cool but not really good enough to stand on their own. 2d bitmaps will always have their place and only the shortsighted should wantl to lose them.
Anyone else feel overwhelmed by high-def graphics?

Herr gets it. I wonder if the people championing this gorgeous highly detailed well animated Metal Slug times ten hi-res 2d game realize that it doesn't exist. Think about Third Strike and how much Capcom lost on that, and that was low-res and a fighting game. Even then, they had to scale back on color depth compared to Street Fighter fucking 1991 2 (even if it might have had more colors from blending) let alone King of Fighters. That's why without a gigantic ill-advised guaranteed bankruptcy investment you're not going to get your hypothetical Irem-style or CPS-2 beater so instead hi-res 2d games are going to fall in the following categories:
- Photoshop trash cookie cutter sprites (flash games, sf hd remix)
- Decent Photoshop cookie cutter puppet sprites w/ heavy CG use for BG (vanillaware)
- Undetailed anime-cel sprites with vast pools of the same tone (arcsys)
- Full-on Donkay Kowng!

Yeah, which is why I don't expect 2D graphics to ever improve too much. Technical limitations haven't been the main problem for a long time AFAIK, and developers can't justify spending boatloads of money on super awesome hi res sprites for games that don't sell much anyway.Herr Schatten wrote:At the same time it makes good art more expensive.Davey wrote:Exactly. A higher resolution will make good art look better and bad art look worse.
I was starting to sound eerily familiar so I did a search:
Yep.

I'm a big fan of HD, though I admit that most games aren't really taking advantage of the technology. Two exceptions are COD4, which made every other FPS look like shit, and Wipeout HD, which is just amazing to behold. Both games play as good as they look, so the fancy graphics are actually worthwhile.
Now if only everyone else can follow the same footsteps as these gems....Matsunaga wrote:...I admit that most games aren't really taking advantage of the technology. No shit, that's the only game my brother ever plays anymore. I am NOT kidding when I say this. He's taken to turning in all of the games we used to play but DOESN'T anymore just to spend as much time as he can with this. A shining gem indeed.Matsunaga wrote:...COD4, which made every other FPS look like shit...
CoD4 multiplayer got stale for me after about a week (if that) with it.
Switched the server filter to Hardcore only, and of that Free For All is the one type I can stand. That gets broken really quick on the maps that are good for FFA, like Shipment or Broadcast or whatever (lol Shipment especially has a prime camping spot that is in view of a spawn, and of course they can't shoot back).
I suppose the game looks decent most of the time, but it's not drawing me in so much. Fun fact: Zoom out from one side of the map (Bog is an example - it's the one with that house with a broken-up deck) to see people now that the grass isn't there!
I can play this game at high settings, and it's okay, but a bit uninventive.
Speaking of broken gameplay, holy. SHIT the perks!! Who the fuck thought Martyr and Last Stand were good ideas? I run around like crazy anyhow, but Martyr just gives people no-skill kills now and then. Suppose I could use it to get that "cooked grenade" achievement, I guess...
Every other game mode is too slow for me.
TF2, now there's a decent game.
The Club on PC would be okay if there were some fucking multiplayer servers (or maybe that's a bug in the game, hell if I know - the tech support people never answered that one).
Battlefield series looking alright by comparison too, although they had better get some shit fixed in Heroes (haven't seen Bad Company yet so can't comment on that).
Semi-related: On Wipeout HD, does it play much like, say, Wipeout 64? I had heard so much about that title and it feels to me like Wipeout 64 is less accessible and certainly uglier than the eXtreme-G games. Great music though.

Wipeout 64 and Wipeout Fusion(ps2) probably aren't good to compare to. Try 1, 2, and 3 on PSX and Pure and Pulse on PSP. Wipeout games have a very high learning curve, but if you stick it out it becomes very fun to play. HD just brings it to a new level, with amazing graphics, running at 60fps, and perfect online racing. I have yet to get any lag. Check it out, it's a great game.Ed Oscuro wrote:Semi-related: On Wipeout HD, does it play much like, say, Wipeout 64?
