The Golden Section....

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

I know many people here do art and such. I have an interesting question. Do you feel that the Golden Section still has uses in art or is it nonsense from antiquity? I don't treat it as an absolute law but it is nice rule of thumb, as standard. For those of you who have used it or can think of ways to use it please tell. There has to be a way to use it in a shmup...

For those of you out of the art/math loop the Golden Section is a ratio that has been used in art for many many years. It was thought to be a divine number early on. It is certainly a special number but I don't see it as any more valuable than say Pi or e.

Here is an article on Wikipedia that sums it up well. Just skip to the history section for the math-phobes...

I have a hard enough time drawing hands without making a math problem out of it.

Then you know exactly what I'm talking about. As you probably know the golden section can be used to appromixate the bones of human finger joints. Everyone is different however and this is not an absolute.

my pals in high school were kinda obsessed with PHI aka Golden Mean and fractals in general. Good times indeed. You might get a kick out of www.dimensions-math.org

Hmmm. So all this time there was a standardized aspect ratio that could have been used for video. But no, instead of sticking with 1.618:1 electronics manufacturers have cursed us with 10:9, 3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 8:5, 16:9, etc.
