Your favourite shmup-bosses ?

Post by jochen »

Surely there have been similar threads in the past ... but I try.

Playing a new shmup the big question for me is the look of the
next level-boss. I prefer to shoot living things - only in shmup´s -
not in my real life - flesh looks much better than steel.

There have been many fights in my shmup-past - and I might have
lost more lives than killing big bad guys ( and girls ) at the end
of the levels.

So - no more talking - here some of my favourites :

Radiant Silvergun :

Yeah - I am one of those humans who loves this game - one great
boss after another. And at last - a battle with a ( hopefully not THE )
god.

Thunderforce 5, Level 6 :

while fighting with this boss you want to switch the music-volume
on maximum.

Gynoug / Wings of War :

I might not be the only one who things that your last enemy in level 5
just looks like a big pe .... . Or I have some problems and should
talk with a pschologist.

Crying, Mushisashima, Cyber Core :

great games - you have nothing else to do than shooting insects.

Phoenix :

X-mas 1983 - I got an atari 2600 ( at this time I didn´t know
the big-console-crash was just happening) and I fought my
first boss.

Pulstar:

one of the best ( from many ) shmup´s from the 16-bit-era.
Too bad I suck at shmups like R-type. But the bosses are
reason enough trying to get better.

Katakis, C 64:

five years after my Atari 2600 the bosses became bigger
and looked much better.

I could gon on and on. But i better stop. Instead I am curious about
your favourites.

The end bosses right before they transform into something much smaller. This is sappost to be THE END! THE FINAL FUCKING BATTLE! So it should at least look like the final boss knows this. It really bums me out when the final enemy's last ditch effort if some that's the size of a bee or just a human person.

Here's an idea I don't see many final bosses do. They get BIGGER the more you damage them.

Also I really enjoyed almost all of the bosses from HellSinker. The ending battles in ChoRenSha64k was fantastic aswell .

Surely the mutant baby thing & the strange arachnid cat boss from Guwange deserve a mention?

I also loved the bosses from Axelay, the ED209 thingy & the molten lava - man :D
Just a couple more shots.........

You might wanna check Darius Gaiden or G-Darius. Bosses are freaking big most of the time. Besides all the surrealism. Absolute Defender (what a badass name), Eternal Triangle, Queen Fossil, Eclipse Eye, Neon Illusion Light, Electric Fan (I think that was the name), etc. You can't go wrong with them.

Megamegamegamegamegamega. God, yeah, ChoRenSha68k rocks.

The final boss from Blazing Star. heh, how can we forget of that one! And the Bydo Core.

Seconding HellSinker as usual.

If you wanted bosses that get bigger (and fire bigger) the last boss from Diadra Empty starts as a tiny dark magician with two big bosses escorting it, turns into a freaking gigantic dark dragon of doom with reversed gregorian chanting (roughly 3 times the size of the screen) and becomes The Stone-Like but still huge and surrounded by orbs in the background that will attack you most of the time (something I didn't pay much attention to). Now that's a final battle.

edit: add Ebosidori from Ikaruga, awesome first boss. Apitex-Evo from Ether Vapor 'cause it's freaking big and has wings. VIVIT and Gates from the Samidare Extra Stage. Main from Exception too! And the black magician from that Mountain of Faith clone shooter by Dixq. The spells are fast as hell and, overall, it's a nice battle.

I've always been a fan of reoccurring bosses. Bashinet in Mahou, Black Heart in Garegga, and the Stranger in Giga Wing just to name a few. Something about seeing them multiple times a playthrough just makes you hate them and gives them a certain significance.

As for individual bosses, Envy in Batrider is definitely up there. I love to hate that guy. The 5th boss in Rayforce is pretty cool (and he's also the first time you hear that badass boss music in the game). Most of the bosses in Darius Gaiden, giant fish were never so menacing and well designed.

Bazzcock from Batrider is really cool. Very dense patterns, chasing lasers, enemy spawning, that nice tails you can aura-bomb for sweet points, and that cool "cutting itself out of a plane" part.

Oh, and it´s a mechanical pterosaurus. 8) I also love to hate Boredom, he has something very intimidating about him.

Ikaruga Boss Level 5 and Darius Gaiden bosses definately deserve some love.

The Psyvariar 2 bosses produce the most awesome patterns, and I love Guon - Level 5.

Also, I really like the concept in a shooter when at the beginning of the level you see that level's boss creep past in the background at the very start (RSG, Progear - The list goes on and on).

Where did that tradition start actually?

Also on that game the first three bosses played in kakusei over, the remaining bosses are great too especially for they're visuals but the difficult is insane!!

Gluon in Psyvariar 2.
Kotetsu (lvl2) in RSG.

Side note, Xiga has to be the most terrible, boring boss ever. Fell asleep twice fighting it, on 2 different occasions. And I'm not narcoleptic!
