Looking for CRT.

Post by papado »

TV, hopefully a good brand (sony, sharp, phillips). I live in the UK, and they are impossible to find. Also, is it ok to tate CRT tvs?

Since you're lucky enough to live the UK, it should be no problem finding such a CRT-based TV monitor with SCART input. Then all you'd to do buy some SCART leads and get them wired up for proper RGB output from your gaming consoles and/or arcade PCBs.

You could pick up a used Commodore Amiga 1080 monitor with the essential analog RGB input for a mere $30-$40 at the most. It's recommended to pick up the Amiga 1084-S or the 1084-DS variants as they have all the required user end-adjustment pots to adjust the screen to your liking -- that's not the case with the 1080 monitor though. ^_~

Or if you want to go with something a bit bigger, Sony PVM series or GVM series monitor would be cool to get.

Or you could consider picking up an NEC 29" XM-29 monitor with built-in RGB input. Plus it tates very nicely and has a handy built-in degaussing button. ^_~

The rule of thumb when it comes to getting a smaller RGB monitor, it will look sharper than that of a larger one due to the finer comb filter inside such a smaller monitor setup. I've tried displaying such an Neo-Geo MVS mobo on a Sony 9" CPD-9000 series Trinitron monitor and the picture quality is super razor sharp -- it looks better than that of an Nanao 29" MS9 arcade monitor IMO. ^_~

I've thrown away so many old CRT tvs lately :(

You should be able to get one pretty easily from your local gumtree site. This is the london one and it is full of free TVs.

I have two Sony 21" Wega CRT TVs, they are absolutely excellent and tate just fine (always tate when the TV is turned off). I would't want to be without them. Check ebay for Sony 21" and see what is local to you. They often go for pennies as people don't want them anymore and the delivery is pretty expensive and people can't be bothered to drive a bit to pick them up.

If I pick up monitors though will low-def games look sharp on them (don't they usually have higher native resolutions than TVs)?

your best bet is to either ebay or gumtree it, or try places like cash converters,

as for TATEing in my experience you are normally ok as long as you turn off the TV/Monitor and leave it for a min or so when you move it

I know thet playing Street Fighter (or any of the 2d fighters apart from guilty gear) on the Dreamcat through a VGA box looks terrible as the sprites are low res. if the monitor will do low res (maybe through Component) then I would have thought you will be fine.

the old commodore minitors are meant to be excellent but I have not tried them myself and I don't think they have scart sockets on them.
