Will you bother upgrading to a DS-i?

Post by Skykid »

Hrm, I'm thinking in light of the recent news I might as well rush my current DS to ebay - and sharpish.

Anyone else going to upgrade this November to the GBA-less, Multimedia'd up DS-i?

I will.
I do not care for the media crap.
But it has a better display and better speakers (perhaps even a good d-pad?) so it's better than the DSL in my opinion. The price of roughly 130€ for a japanese unit is quite a bit less than the 150€ you have to fork over here for a DSL.
So basically it's win/win. You get a better product for less cost.

I couldn't be bothered to upgrade my fat DS to a lite even for the better/brighter screen, and a camera and music playback aren't going to sweeten the deal, either. The built-in web browser and more friendly menu system are nice and slightly anger me because they should have been there from the beginning.

No, I barely use my DS Lite, 0.3MP camera is useless to me, don't see the point of an SD card slot since I have a flashcart, screen is barely bigger, also no GBA slot.

I have a DS Lite with an R4 and EZ3in1 slot2 expansion, so not only would I only be gaining the gimmicky camera and slightly better screens, but I'd also be losing rumble and GBA functionality. Nintendo didn't even add texture filtering or WPA2 support, which are the two things that irked me about the original DS/DSLite.

Hm, much agreed on the texture filtering. Good point.

rumble..? that'd get in the way of everything.

and i agree. having an R4 makes the SD slot pretty useless, and i have a bajillion GBA games that have replay value.

green looks nice, tho. :?

Seems like another downgrade in an endless line of downgrades.

I once tried playing a mario advance game on a GBA SP at a store display. I don't know about Other People, but I do not have infant fingers.

The Wiiiiiiz and Pandorable have USB slots, and TV out. A later generation of something like those will probably be my next portable..

Nope, it's not really a step in the right direction.. the camera abilities are neat, but they don't help me when I'm gaming. The bigger screens will help but.. it's not worth buying an entirely different console just for slightly bigger screens. >_<

Voting "no" for now.

Like the ol' saying goes: Good things come to those who wait. ^_~

Just like with the Sony PSP, the original JPN PSP-1000 and USA PSP-1001 are quite a bit different from it's PSP Slim counterparts and the upcoming 3rd PSP iteration as well. Might as well stick with the original version for the time being and just be content with it as it is.

Portable gaming has come a long ways since the early days of the original b&w Gameboy and color LCD based Atari Lynx handhelds. Granted NEC's Turbo Express was priced for the upscale portable gamers not lacking the monetary department to the tune of $299.99 USD back in January of 1991 of it's intial debut.

The NEC GT/TE handheld still is regarded as the Rolls Royce of portable gaming...retro portable gaming with style and class. ^_~

Maybe but I want nifty colors. I loved my DS Lite to bits and pieces and the GBA slot is useless to me considering we have 3 GBA SPs plus a beat up old fat boy DS. The camera doesn't intrigue me but I do love the fact that I'll be able to download games as well as online. I used to use my PSP to go online when I was too fucking lazy to sit in the basement so.
It’s almost over. It’s just begun.

I got my DS for free [gift], which is nearly the only way I would have gotten one, so no :P

I've got two Lites already (one for me, one for my wife). I'm not upgrading...both of my Lites have Edge cards and the one has a 3 in 1. No GBA slot, no 3 in one, plus I already have over a hundred GBA games...silly to take that out. In fact, this may drive me to buy a back-up DS Lite. Just in case.

I have no use for the cameras. The SD card functionality doesn't appeal to me. The media functionaly works with my PSP already...and oh wait...I don't use it. Not to mention the Edge runs media already if I want it, which I don't. The screen is microscopically larger...which is nice. But I don't REALLY need that. Especially not at the cost of a GBA slot. Blech.

I'm generally happy with my original DS. Might pick up a Lite for my brother for his birthday, but aside from that I have no interest in buying a new DS.

the only thing I care about are the bigger screens, but the missing GBA port is what's keeping me from saying yes. I'll probably just not upgrade till a year or so when I see one for a good price. I honestly don't use my handhelds all THAT much.

the multimedia crap I could care less about, the PSP is light years ahead of the DS for stuff like that so it's my machine for that kind of stuff.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I probably will, but it probably won't hit the US until this time or later next year. It's already been announced to be hitting both Japan and Europe before NA, an initial talks with Nintendo doesn't seem incredibly hopeful of anytime soon.

I'm all about the possibility of a handheld VC or downloadable game service. And honestly, by the time I can get my hands on one, it'll probably be already implemented.

I've considered importing one as well, but theres mixed messages if it will be region free. Reggie didn't know when questioned in interviews.

I've long believed it would be nice to see a DS with a lower cost, a bigger screen, better battery life, a slimmer design, and no GBA slot.

However, raising the price, shortening battery life, and adding features that do not interest me as a gamer does not make it an instant buy. I may get one eventually, but I'll keep my DS Lite for playing GBA games.
