Are you a collector or a gamer?
I previously had an almost complete collection of saturn shooters, which i sold a couple of years back when i was short on cash, so my dilema is this:
ive recently accidently stumbled across a modded saturn on ebay.
do i hunt down all my old favs like RSG and Battle Garegga etc, and spend probably around £600 to get my collection back?
OR
cos im more of a gamer than a collector, do i hunt down the isos on the net and get to play my favourite games for next to nothing?
admittedly i did like having them all in the original boxes and displayed in my cd rack, however it doesnt really make economic sense to spend all that cash when i could spend £6 on 50 blank cds and a day downloading some isos.
my dilema continues, just wondering what peoples' thorts are and whether you only own them cos you like to play them or own them for the sake of collecting too?

Nah, I'm both collector and gamer. I play everything I get as much as possible, and let my friends loose on them when they visit.lgb wrote:I thought a collector was someone who buys shiny new games and leaves them in the condition they got them forever, because they were afraid of playing wear and tear. ;_;
But I do like to keep the collection in good condition. I'd play Taromaru whenever I fancied it, but I wouldn't bust the disc up in the process.

I used to be a collector of sorts. Then I realized what a waste of money, time, and space it was. Once I started moving around more and would have to pack my shit up every time, I decided it was time to just stop. The only stuff I've kept are shooters and the occasional odd game or two, but even those I've pruned down to the cream of the crop. Why play crap when you can play good stuff?

I used to have tons of games stored neatly in plastic bins and was proud of the collection I amassed, but I hardly took them out to play'em. I wasted too much energy thinking about "what am I in the mood to play". I had tons of games to choose from and when I did pick a game, a moment later I changed my mind and pick another one. This cycle would on and on that I'm so mentally drained from it that turned to TV or check email instead.
Now I buy the originals if my PC can't emulate it or the backups I download are sh*t. While I do have a collection of games, they'll eventually get traded for something else. Of course I do have handful of games I plan to keep until I die.

I see no problem with having ISOs of systems for games that are no longer for sale via retail stores. It's just a decision you make for yourself if you want a physical item or not. If you do want something you can hold, find a happy medium and just own the best stuff (to you). Bootleg the rest because frankly, you probably won't play those much if at all. Owning every shooter on Saturn is just stupid because some of them just plain suck.
I own games like RSG and Garegga because I like them. They're sort of like works of art to me. I'm not hard up for the cash, so why sell them? If you can afford to own the best stuff, go for it.

Dunno man. Quite scarily, someone told me that isn't the case at all.Michaelm wrote:I own the originals cause unlike burned media they will last forever if handled correctly. Or atleast that's what I think considering it's pressed and all.

They'll last longer, certainly. Plus writing out a disc image takes care of any possible problem nicely.Skykid wrote:Dunno man. yep, didnt think so
otherwise, i own all original stuff. ketsui, doj black label, galuda 2, futari, pink sweets, muchi muchi pork, etc etc
if you're really confident, i'd say put your money where your mouth is, but that hardly sounds like a bet worth winning
buying a game doesn't make you a collector

convincing!for the record i buy all the new shooters that come out just to support the softies who support my favourite genre
...just do whatever you want

Playing games has always been my primary thing, as opposed to collecting them. That said, keeping off the internet long enough to play is something i next need to learn

Haha....Hard not to, the rate they're being sold off latelySkykid wrote:jpj you bastard! When did you go around snapping up all da Cavez goodnezz?!

Apparently, he's been snapping 'em up even before you got your Egret II cab. So many arcade PCBs to try out and not enough hours in a day. Once you get bitten by the arcade PCB bug, there's no known cure. Unless you want to try to quit "cold turkey" and suffer the effects of PCB gaming withdrawl. ^_~Skykid wrote:jpj you bastard! PC Engine Fan X! ^_~
Exactly this for me too - I collect the like a wild thing and play them feverishly...Skykid wrote:Nah, I'm both collector and gamer. What did you expect to happen?Guardians Knight wrote:mods plz lock/delete this thread, i thort ppl could have sensible discussions about stuff, but i guess i was wrong.
You titled the thread "collector or gamer" and then your very first post is essentially making the distinction that a "collector" buys the games and the "gamer" does nothing but pirate them to play.
It looks to me as though you started the topic off on completely the wrong foot, and you still wanted people to take the topic seriously after that?
Fine: Here's an answer to your question: I'm a gamer who buys all his games instead of pirating them. I guess in your mind that would make me a collector

You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.
