I think this is in the bounds of the rules here.
I have a modded PS2, and am sorta scared that it could break down at some point, and then I wouldn't be able to find another one.
So, I bought two DUO 3 Ultra modchips, in case I had to mod another PS2 down the line.
I did this, since I didn't really want to have to fork out the cash now for another modded PS2.
Are those modchips good, and would the only real problem be in finding someone to install them(which I don't think would be THAT tough).
I don't think I broke any rules. I hope not anyway.

why not buy a used PS2 that is the same model as your current one. if any of the components fail on your chipped one, PSU, Laser, DVD Drive etc then just swap the parts out. Can't be that hard as I have done it with lots of things.
On the whole electronic devices seem to, from my experience, last a long time if treated well. Some capacitors seem to be a pain though as I have had some leaky ones in some kit.

softmod....
why do people insist on hardware mods when it is so much easier to run it off an HDD??
.....no strain on the system....the laser will NEVER die because it is only used for like 1/2 second when the system boots, and you dont run the risk of fucking anything up with messy installs
and you wont wear out your original discs either....cuz you wont ever have to use them
and if the HDD fails, just get a new one from anywhere.....and if the PS2 does eventually die of old age, just take your HDD, memory card and ps1 game and throw it in another fat ps2......done!
used fat ps2's are readily available(where i am at least) for like $45-$50.....
just google independence exploit and sell those modchips....
