I tried out Turbo Force today, and some how, I was getting my ass kicked, lol, I think I may try it again in a few minutes.

I think what it was, was that I was being impatient and eager, the second time I just threw in a credit before I left to go to Dollar General and I was able to clear the first level in a breeze, I'll try it again later. Gotta find my old overclocking software and see if I can get it to work.

Terra Force is the perfect beginner shoot
The first one i'v finish with 1 coin when i was maybe 11-12 years old (not at the first try, don't run away ^^)

He's really easy when you'v found your way, to get the shield and keep it on you.

plus it alternates horizontal and vertical scrolling which makes it a complete shooter .

One subtle tricky aspect about Turbo Force is that it tries to balance its easier gameplay by reducing firepower the longer the fire button remains held down.

I'd also recommend Aero Fighters (by the same V-system/Mc O'River company, if I recall correctly) which--although it uses button pulsing rapid fire and starts out a bit harder--also tends to use traditional enemy bullet patterns for its first four stages (at a faster speed than most 80's era traditional shooters).

Granted that Altus USA only imported the first Donpachi PCB for the American arcade scene back in 1995...at least give Altus USA proper credit for introducing Cave and it's first arcade shmup PCB title to American arcade gamers back in the day. ^_~

The third PCB of Cave's "Dodopachi-Dai Ou Jou" (DDP-DOJ) will kick you in the nuts again and again...bullet hell is the overall theme presented in this particular DDP game.

Why are you even bringing up DOJ in the face of a newbie? Better question should be.. why are you saying for them to get a Supergun or candy cab? That's stupid dood. He's new. :|

I would actually recommend NOT doing this because it might not really be your thing. Then you have all that money outlaid and you'll regret it..
There's a time when playing with said consoles and emulation gets bland...thus the next big step would be getting a supergun or candy cabinet for the real genuine arcade shmup experience, am I right?

Granted that there are some unemulated arcade PCBs not dumped and the only way to play 'em is by this particular route -- that is the route that Cave has currently taken with it's newest PCBs. Sure, it might set one back a few bills and such in the wallet/purse department...but it's totally worth it in the end. I have no such regrets going the supergun route. ^_~

I guess the big question you need to ask yourself is how much you want to spend. Also make sure you know the safe method to Tate your TV... by unplugging it 5-10 minutes while you GENTLY rotate your TV sideways (and also before rotating it back to normal)

A few really great cheap games

Soukyugurentai
Gunbird 2 or Strikers1945pt2 (both Psikyo which means very similar)
Gigawing 1 or 2

Don't think price always determines quality, but some more expensive games are not to be missed down the line such as

Under Defeat
Ikaruga
Batsugun
Battle Garegga (once your an expert)

Really though, you should get good at the ones you already have before buying much else, whats the glory in having a shelf full of shmups that you all kick your ass. Focus on Galactic Attack, Thunderforce V, and Mars Matrix, those are all superb games to hone your skills on before getting overwhelmed with too many games.

x.x Game Room are really nice beginner shmups. They are free for a start, easy or hard as you want them to be, contain most of the more advanced concepts, and borrow from other titles.

It's better to get a few titles you like and play them to death rather than spread yourself thin over lots of titles. Once you get bored or 1cc start branching out.

i feel the need to stick my oar in here.

you wont get past the raiden project for ps1 for a great training shmup, also a definite non bullet hell type game, erm if you are gonna mame it look for raiden 1 and 2, altho if its set to arcade difficulty you will get your arse handed to ya by sniper tanks, the ps1 version is more kind and sets the default to 'normal' rather than 'arcade'.
