the GGPO recruitment drive

Post by jpj »

i was a bit late to the party on this one, but if you haven't heard of it GGPO is an international online network for playing beat-'em-ups.

supports: super street fighter 2 turbo, alpha 3, 3rd strike, king of fighters 2002, garou mark of the wolves, and some other shit too.

http://ggpo.net/

i know kern and BBH are on there, anyone else from here play on GGPO?

works really well with some clever computer shit that basically "hides" lag, and from what i understand, GGPO will be used for the street fighter HD remix and SF4's online play. word!

the 3rd strike lobby tends to be full of the usual macho posturing bullshit, but the super turbo lobby is full of friendly people.

it's easy enough to set up, even i managed to do it, and i'm a right pikey when it comes to the internet. definitely recommend people check it out if you're a fan of capcom or SNK brawlers.

now where yo curleh mustache at!

Good Game, Peace Out

Yeah, I've played ST on it for hundreds of hours already. Definitely the best lag-handling algorithm around.

Well, Mr. Massacre originated from GGPO. Decent player; dumb arrogance. Cheaters can't really get anywhere on GGPO ST because there are too many good players and the lag is minimal enough to really hamper down lag tactics.

I haven't been there in awhile, but if I am there you can catch me playing ST, Alpha 2/3, and Third Strike. On rare occasion you'll see me suck hard at KoF or Darkstalkers 3.

I play on GGPO every day and then 2DF if I can't find competition on GGPO. I'm generally playing 3rd Strike since that's the game I'm learning right now. Only thing I don't like about GGPO is that it tends to desync a lot.

do you go by the same name on ggpo, ganelon? :)

Sorry if i'm a bit late on this, but they finally got Third Strike emulated?
Is it a perfect emulation?

Yeah, jpj, I go by Ganelon there. But I'll probably never be on at the same time as you on weeknights since I'm generally on midnight EST, which is 4-5 hours off. Maybe on a Saturday sometime.

3rd Strike isn't going anywhere, that's old stuff from several months ago. All the games on GGPO right now are staying.

GGPO has the best lag correction, but for CPS3 you'd better have a dual core or it gets choppy. It has some weird bugs with 3S, such as horizontal black bars appearing sometimes. It also has live spectating.

2DF has slightly worse netcode (not really noticeable with CPS2/Neo-Geo, but more noticeable with cps3 over longer distances like USA > UK) and no live spectating, but a larger selection of games, a replay database, plus stats/rankings for some of the games. It just got a new interface, which at first was horrible but Damdai has been fixing the problems quickly.

I'm usually on 2DF because...

1. My router severs my connection when I connect to a room with a lot of users in GGPO, so if I want to use it I have to disconnect my router.
2. Because I like lots of gay games such as KOF2000, Real Bout 1, etc. It also has a lot of non-fighting games such as Baseball Stars 2, Windjammers, Twinkle Star Sprites, and Magical Drop 3.
3. I like that it saves replays, in case I want to upload dumb shit to YouTube.
<BEOWOOF> my lifes like battle garegga every time i kill man life becomes harder and the only solution to making things easier is killing ymself.
<SCRUNBABBY> my lifes like gwangs

I think the worst is boxer by a slight bit. Honda, dictator, Chun Li, Dee Jay are pretty even. Now online, things are different as characters with good holds or rely on ticks (Honda, dictator, and Blanka) are overpowered and rushdown works better than reaction. GGPO is generally pretty good about this but the more lag in the game, the more this shows.

if you haven't heard of it GGPO is an international online network for playing beat-'em-ups.

Aww, you got my hopes up. You mean 2D fighters, not beat-em-ups.

been following this from first release. ggpo is awesome, and it runs well enough for me with wine.
