A cool story, interesting characters, great visuals, flawless voice acting, solid gameplay, well-balanced difficulty... HL2 does everything right.
(except not having a Mac version, which forces me to dual-boot)
Well, I guess it's safe to say my view differs
IMHO, the story was not nearly as interesting as the first game's, the characters and their voice acting were good, as were the graphics, but the gameplay was so-so thanks to busted (and very drawn out) vehicle sections. The game was also way too easy from start to finish thanks to easily killed enemies and far too much ammo and health regardless of difficulty. And to top it all off, it had what has to be one of the most disappointing endings I have ever seen in a FPS. Oh, and a rather noticeable lack of atmosphere too (except for Ravenloft).
I just beat OpFor (again) over the weekend (got sick of the gigantic number of powerful monsters at the end and not powerful enough shit to take them down, so GOD MODE TURN ON!!11 yeehaw).
HL2 is like Lost (or vice versa), I guess. This happens, that happens, you don't really know why and it's like TUNE IN NEXT EPISODE!11
OpFor was like HL: every nutcase conspiracy theory and alien invasion novel painted with a (rather thin at times) veneer of originality.
Both approaches have their good and bad points, I suppose. Complicating matters, of course, is that the Source engine is far more capable than GoldSrc ever was.
I played Gears 2 a whole heap at a press event, and I have my copy arriving on Monday so I'll tell you what I discover then. It's quite remarkable visually, but if modern shooters don't float your boat it won't do a thing for you...
It didn't really for me, but Horde multiplayer is a whole heap of mighty big fun....
EDIT: Spelling

I think Gears of War gets too much respect. The first game is fun in campaign or in 2 player co op over live but online multiplayer is horrible. I can't understand why eveyone loves the online multioplayer, visually great, nice controls and camera but boring as fukk.
Its a very good game don't get me wrong, I'll buy the sequel and I'll enjoy playing it but, its not going to be the highlight of my gaming this year (need my MLG 45!)

I could understand faulting the online for the technical problems and balance issues that plague the first Gears, but I've never thought of it as "boring" in the least bit. What did you find boring about it? I thought gameplay online was pretty intense most of the time. There's nothing like being the last person left on your team and taking down three other guys all by yourself.
I'm not so concerned with the campaign personally. I'll definitely play through it a few times and enjoy the hell out of it I'm sure, but after that I'll probably never touch it again. The online is what gives Gears legs for me. Thankfully I don't find it boring. With all the improvements they're making with regards to the online, it looks like it'll be more fun than ever, for the fans at least.
