Ha ha-I just bought a copy of "Mutant Storm" from Oxfam for 49p (yes that's £0.49!) and man it rocks
I've tended to steer away from PC shooters in the past cos of assumptions about oversimplistic gameplay, blocky graphics and unresponsive controls but this has opened my eyes. There's a lot of PC shooters and I'm guessing a lot of rubbish, but what about the gems?
So what other tiptop PC shmups have I been missing out on?I know about your perfect Cherry Blossoms (before you start...) and I'm looking for nice graphics, intelligent gameplay and joypad configurable controls.
Mmmm...can't wait

indeed... i was about to name a few, but directin' him towards shootthecore is the way to go... theres PLENTY of PC Shmups to play, sometimes you just dont have enough time to play'em all.
I take your point-but are there any real PC "greats" that are generally agreed upon to be awesome?
Like the man said it's taking me all the time I got to play on the Saturn...by the time I've ploughed through that shootthecore list we'll all be speaking Chinese lol

Having cleared Touhou out of the way (still I would recommend Subterranean Animism, probably one of the fiercest Touhou games next to Shoot the Bullet and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) and before a picture of Mame shows up...
The usual:
HellSinker (absolutely surreal, on-acid game and completely obscure interface+menus, takes a while to master but once you get the hang of this monster...)
You might wanna try Steel Saviour (which is a tiny Einhänder tribute) but it's frustratingly hard and has all the 'euroshmuppy' stuff that drives people mad in a bad sense. Despite that the 2D graphics are some of the best stuff I've seen in a while with a unique style that might make you keep playing.
DiadraEmpty. I can't believe barely anyone mentions this one. Horizontal Cave-Darius-Gradius based game where you fight in a predefined arena (roughly about three times as wide as the screen, whose only resolution at the moment is 1027x768) gigantic, epic, over the top bosses and insane amounts of bullets and pretty lights. This is Panzer Dragoon turned into a full 2D STG. An upcoming patch seems to promise adding another chapter to the extra stage (it has 3 already).
Siter Skain stuff: Kamui, RefleX and Alltynex2nd (although this one is still a demo) Think doujin tribute to RayForce series. They rock.
The Under Stellar 2: you rush through a stage against the timer, this is a complete Macross tribute.
Genetos: play through the story of shooters! Freeware and amazing with lock-on laser guided missiles.
The Trapezoedhron of Darkness: the one with Lovecraft inspired boss names. Horrid graphics... but quite fun.
Shikigami No Shiro 3 is also for PC.
Jets 'N' Guns: once you can get past the first missions and upgrade the ships or get the ship with Wing Geometry (kills the annoying inertia), things start getting fun. It has a superb soundtrack as well.

i dont know why your list sounds like a chopped-off version of Postman's Must Have ... but hey, its you Zwei, pirate king where there's any.
I'd recommend anything by Kenta Cho and X.X as great starting points. I'm not personally a big fan of Touhou but you might like that style of game as well, in which case there's plenty there. On Shoot the Core, there's a filter of "must have" games that you can sort through, and you would be fine trying all of those and seeing what you like.

Is there such a thing as a region-locked computer data CD?
For that matter, if I buy a JP PS1 game, can I use it on my computer (with an emulator)?
edit: CRS68k and Warning Forever are radical
There might be some games that require files or something along those lines that are only in Japanese versions of Windows, but I don't think that's much of an issue (if it even is one). You should be able to install a PC game on a PC regardless of where the game was published. I have a few UK and Japanese PC games that run just fine for me on my US PC.
As for the EMU question, yes, you can play any region game on an EMU. You just need the proper region bios.

as far as i know, no, theres no such thing. and even if there were, it could be cracked.
the closest thing to what you're asking, is the language barrier and teh regional settings thing, it happens with some japanese games that if you dont have your PC with full japanese setup (or at least AppLocale installed) you wont be able to play those games, but after you setup your PC the right way, you can play mostly any game you want... but region lockin' per se, no.
