Is a J-PS2 good for all types of shmuppers?

Enjoy missing out on a ton of great games, then.ROBOTRON wrote:I bought a JPS2 when the PS2 first debuted...and I've never looked back. I don't care about U.S. software.
Oh well, it's ok. I once went through that weeaboo phase of not wanting to play anything made in the US. Then I turned 18 and realized "what-the-fuck".

Well, I do own other systems that have shmups. I will get one eventually; there's also stuff like Sega Ages Aferburner that I'm dying to play. I think I'll just concentrate on the consoles I do have for now. RPG's also really compete with my shmup dollars these days.Strider77 wrote:I don't see how you can be a shooter fan and have your fix without access to import PS2 games. Not unless you give the home ports the middle finger and go PCB.
You are missing out on some great stuff.
But I don't want to go the Swapmagic route, nor chip it, I'd just rather get a J-PS2.
The Wii VC used to get me my fix, and I sometimes wish I had a Wii, but I won't sell my PSP-not as many shmups, but I always regret it when I sell a console. Plus it does have some cool imports-I LOOOOVE PSP Star Soldier!!

FreeMC Boot + ESR is a less functional alternative to SwapMagic et al. Since you're not getting a JP PS2 right now, you might want to investigate it on a temporary basis since it's convenient and cheap. (Especially if you're still working at a GS.)
But a warning about imports; be prepared to shell out $60+ per game unless it's a budget (re-)release or on sale. We get serious price breaks here in the US.
Shit, it's like looking a few years back in time at myself.

Now you're in the phase where you overcompensate for your former status as a japanophile by sneering at everyone and calling everything "weeaboo".Zweihander wrote:Oh well, it's ok. Much like observing weeaboos is like looking back roughly 6-7 years at myself. STRANGE, ISN'T IT?honorless wrote:FreeMC Boot + ESR is a less functional alternative to SwapMagic et al. I'd recommend The Red Star, if you haven't played it already. Great beat-em-up/ shoot-em-up hybrid. It's a top-down 3D brawler which becomes a shmup whenever a boss fight rolls around. Superb design and controls, IMO.KNTain wrote:I could probably live without US developed PS2 games. I mean, I've liked a good number of them, but most were multiplatform. And almost always better elsewhere.

Yeah, I'd like to get that one, but in the year or so that I've worked for GameStop, I've never seen a copy at our store. I may have to order that one on Ebay.Zweihander wrote:I'd recommend The Red Star, if you haven't played it already. Great beat-em-up/ shoot-em-up hybrid. No shit? I got mine used at Gamestop several months ago, for $12, and sort of felt bad after playing it, wishing I paid $15 for the new copy that was sitting next to it.dave4shmups wrote:Yeah, I'd like to get that one, but in the year or so that I've worked for GameStop, I've never seen a copy at our store. I know Best Buy has it for $20 (maybe less by now?), at least around here. Good luck finding it, the game's fun as hell, and even more so on co-op. ...And on a related note, Earth Defense 2017 is a fun co-op game if you happen to have a 360. Picture something like Lost Planet, but much faster-paced, crazy amounts of enemies, and very arcade-like in nature.

I thought it was alright. The shooter bosses were pretty surprisingly solid, but the melee stuff was too slow and wore super-quick.I'd recommend The Red Star, if you haven't played it already. EDF2017 is also a way worse game than EDF2. :D

EDF2 is bogged with more slowdown than The Matrix and Advent Children combined, though. :/KNTain wrote:I thought it was alright. This, except in 2005. Fun series, difficult curve!gs68 wrote:7 years ago, when I wanted Beatmania IIDX, I decided to just get a JPS2 instead of risking my current with a modchip.
No having to worry about modchip protection + being able to play Region 2 DVDs = <3
It just occured to me that I don't have anything but 3 beatmania titles, 6 IIDX games, and Gradius III & IV Fukkatsu. Time to go hunting soon...
