R4 and DS homebrew scene - the official topic

Post by Turrican »

So I got an R4, mainly for this:

http://www.mrdictionary.net/lemmings/

And needless to say, it's well worth alone the purchase of the flash card.

I also installed scummVM and it seems to work mostly fine, while the Sega Master System Emulator (in order to play Phantasy Star re-translation) had some sound and speed issues.

What other cool things am I supposed to do with the R4, keeping it legal (ie no DS roms)?

I never knew this project existed! I'll have to download it and give it a whirl.

I've got the M3 + 2 gb micro sd card. Well worth the money.

Nintendo emulation is great for the DS. I suggest you give that a try.

Wow, what an awesome project. Don´t have the time to check that out now but it looks very mouthwatering!

I already posted this but it´s so cool it can use a little more coverage, so here is the Tetris The Grandmaster homebrew port:
(edited out because legality is considered debatable  )

Just for the sake of argument, I don't think anything in the previous posts is legal.

Cool Lemmings port though!

Legally debatable or not, that Tetris Grandmaster port is something to marvel at! online ranking in an homebrew - that's just too awesome. With this and Lemmings DS my R4 has already paid back the money!!

P.S. also, I've checked the emulation scene a bit:

http://www.pocketheaven.com/boards/index.php

There's this SMS emulator, "Apprentice Minus DS" (yeah, bizarre name) which is quite robust, and thanks to the DS screen size 256x192 offers great full-screen, non-stretched SMS emulation. It works quite well with patched Phantasy Star, so have a look!

I don't get how "R4" has become a synonym for "flashcard".
It wasn't the first Slot 1 card, it isn't the best, it isn't the cheapest - why is it SO popular?
BTW if you want to buy a flashcard (for legal reasons, please) i can recommend dealextreme.com > other pages are ripoffs.
I remember seeing a local shop selling e.g. an N5 for 35€, when you can get it shipped for 9$ from Dealextreme.
Edit: Oh noes, now it's 11$

I'm not really sure why R4 cards are so popular, either. I've always been a Supercard guy. I guess it doesn't really matter what you're using, as long as it works, though.

yeah glitch is made out of awesome.
something you should try out too is meteora.
http://meteora.lo2k.net/

it's a puzzler, where you gather energy/matter and try to destroy the planet of your enemy.
but what makes this game really cool is the "spells" you can cast.
try it :D

I may have to buy a new passkey. I have one of the first m3's they released a compact flash one, it's freaking huge). But I haven't used it at all since my old ds died and I switched up for a lite.

I use CycloDS. It's not the cheapest but in my opinion it's by far the most versatile and easiest one to use.

Anyone have an opinion on which homebrew card thing would be the best (i guess features? abilities?)? I'm thinking about getting a DSL in the near future.

I'm also curious on people's opinions of the best card, and reliable places to get them from (I see one vote for dealextreme, thanks!).

OK, so this goes straight up there among the best homebrews, next to Lemmings and MeRAMAN's TGM:

LODE RUNNER ORIGINE (v 1.2)
