Checked out the 2008 remake of Death Race?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I recall hearing about this Death Race 2000 film from Roger Corman...with ol' Sly starring in it. Mr. Corman was known for filming such films on a shoestring budget and get 'em done in as few days of filming as possible to cut down on production costs.

I'll have to see what this new remake is all about. ^_~

The classic car crashes/high speed chase scenes in the 1981 "The Road Warrior" (aka Mad Max 2 for the rest of the world) can't be topped.

The original Gone in Sixty Seconds film was crazy for filming such high-speed chases and stunts without the usage of stunt drivers, the actor did all of the crazy high-speed driving. Insane shit, indeed. Too bad that the actor who was in the process of filiming the sequel of "Gone in Sixty Seconds II" died in a freak prop relate accident -- and thus, it was never finished.

I remember when I was in college me and my friend saw the original Death Race on a list of great movies in Maxim or something. We got a hold of it and watched it. We weren't all that impressed with it but it was an interesting watch all the same just because it was so goofy and fairly violent for the time it was made.

I doubt this remake is any better, but for different reasons. Ian McShane from Deadwood being tied to it is definitely a plus; that guy is just a ruthless badass. I'm afraid this will just be another movie in a long line of recent remakes being made just because film studios don't feel like investing in some new ideas. I'll probably still check it out, I'll just go in with low expectations.

Death Race was a bad movie but was still great fun to watch, a well handled remake would be worth going to see.

The old death race is a cult classic, the old peoples home scene cracks me up every time 8)

This 'remake', though being a Paul WS anderson movie, actually looks quite good

And for a kind of modern Mad Max, watch Neil Marshall's (dog soldiers, descent) Doomsday, pretty good movie too

why? :?
I think I listed the original in the favorite bad movie thread.
What's with remakes and covers? humans are so zombified they don't care anymore? Pretty soon they'll start making re-remakes and everybody will be happy with that too.
Anyway, seems this movie is completely different and more like Running man. They guy seems to have been framed to get a decent driver into the show? dunno, just watched the trailer.
I'll eat my keyboard, webcam it and put it on youtube if they don't make a really bad license game about it.
I can't imagine they will drive the streets and unsuspecting citizens will be scouped. Probably go through some homeless shelter nobody sadly cares about.
Oh and a woman who organizes these races, yeah, seems plausable, uhum....

Why re-make a "B" movie? Nobody saw Death Race 2000...David Carradine was a hot property back then because of the popularity of the Kung-Fu tv show...and even his presence couldn't save that movie. So 20 years later, remake it?

Dumb idea. Waste of money and movie goers time.

How exciting. Lets remake this.

I had a shitload of fun at this movie. Never seen the original, but I'll probably be renting it soon (hoping it's as amusing as this was)

Apparently none of the cars were 3D CG—everything was built by hand. Took a year or so before filming could start.

The omg dramatic camerawork used for emphasis might wear on some people's nerves though.

Bottom line, if you like campy movies that use an implausible premise to show you lots of cars/weapons/violence (and a few girls) you should probably go see it. Fewer annoying one-liners than other movies of its ilk too, I'd say.

Death Race 2000 put old people in the road as a sort of sport-related euthanasia.

Also, I bought the flyer for the arcade game on the cheap when picking up another.

Isn't that just great?

(For some reason Death's expression kinda reminds me of the infamous 4chan / Awesome Smiley.)

YOU FUCK WITH ME AND WE'LL SEE WHO SHITS ON THE SIDEWALK

This movie was horrible and awesome.

The driver intros looked like someone watched Korean Pro Starcraft and the track had fucking POWERUPS on it.

I'll never forgive Paul WS Anderson for AVP1 :x .

The original had its moments - Rocky's angry attitude and the hospital wheeling out the sick for MORE POINTS :D

Its a remake and its Anderson

Someone with sense! If it's a film with Paul W S Anderson directing, avoid like the plague. This guy doesn't even deserve threads being made about his films unless he's being flamed.

He's Hollywood's number one retard.

Anyone else remember when Ian McShane was just a lovable antiques dealer called Lovejoy?

He is indeed but I do have to confess I quite liked AvP1

I mean I think the fans really had some unrealistic hopes for it, I thought it was ok what they came up with

This was a very bad, semi-entertaining movie. It certainly wasn't what I was expecting though, as the remake tries to take itself seriously. If you've seen Death Race 2000, this may come as more than a bit of shock =P
