No real need for me to elaborate, but it wouldn't be right if I didn't post here.

The only shmups I've single-credit-cleared are Shienryu Explosion, Psyvariar Revision, and Psyvariar 2.

In most shmups I can make it to level 4.

So I guess I suck compared to many on this board, but I'm awesome compared to anyone I know.

I'm a charter member of CMoon's Low Bar Club.

Still, I refuse to credit feed, set my shmups on easy, or change the defaults to suit my suckiness (except in the case of Garegga's "Orange Ball" and small hit-box options). I'm not saying there's anything wrong with doing any of that, if that's what you like to do. It's just not my cup of tea.
In the end its not whether you 1cc'd it but whether you enjoyed playing it/felt like your time was well spent.
Very true. It seems that there are a few people that get exasperated whenever the talk turns to lack of skills, etc. Hey, live and let live. If some folks enjoy playing games, but don't feel like putting in the effort to get good at them, that's valid. It's all about personal enjoyment.

I'm still pretty new to these games, so I'm not sure of whether or not I've reached my limit. As much as I probably should lower difficulty levels or increase lives (or use bombs), I think that I'm stubborn, and simply keep jumping back up towards that formidable wall of difficulty. Sure, it's slow-moving, but I don't have any time-based goals for doing anything, and I'd rather switch to another game (generally-speaking) if I reach an impass, than alter the settings... Instead, later coming back to the game with a bit more experience, and seeing if I still reach the same impass. Note that this hasn't happened yet; It's just that I have five of these games, and I keep running back and forth between them because they're fun!

I do find that playing for less time can be better than more time, though. It's like exercise... You don't have to do an unbelievable amount of it, but if you do what you need, and do so regularly, then you're set for the long haul. I think. Anyway, I'm not sure if I should post in here, but BulletMagnet has--and by whom I'm mopped all over the floor with, in Shikigami no Shiro II... 8)

Mostly, I wanted to drop this in for IlMrm and Zweihander! Hot off of the griddle, and very thorough:

I just cannot figure out how to play a manic shmup properly
You don't, you simply play as far as possible & dodge bullets until you die! :)

Just out of the top of my head:
Games I can complete with one credit:

1945 Strikers II - Sometimes I use the plane with the purple shield. If you can master that you can easily complete it as no enemy weapon can penetrate it.

Axelay - The best way to complete this in hard mode is to start off in easy mode & build up you lives until you reach hard mode. You'll have a lot of lives when you reach the last boss.

Carrier Air Wing - My strategy is to avoid buying anything until level 3 or 4. You'll then have enough money too buy everything untill you complete the game.

DoDonPachi - I just focus on my ship & rotate weapons between the straight laser & wide spred shot when ever is needed, unlike most hot-heads who only stick to the laser to blast every thing in their path.

Gynoug/Wings of Wor - In level 3 it's important to get the special that enlarges your primary bullets.

Lords of Thunder (PCE DUO) - Similar strategy with Carrier Air Wing

Lords of Thunder (SEGA CD) - Same as above, but a lot easier.

Macross - Do You Remember Love (PSX) - Very Easy

Thunder Force III - Easy

Twin Cobra II - I Use the 2nd Heli since the green-electric laser does more damage.

I can also reach all the way to the 6th level of Blazing Star with 1 credit, but after that you face that huge Laser Cannon that literally fills up the whole screen with its blasts, & if that’s not enough, its minions come along to join the party! There is no way to survive those blasts; it’s simply a credit killer! Funny that when you die at the spot the game quotes: “Poor Player!”

The rest of the shmups I don't remember.

But I don't consider my self that good, since I can't complete Thunder Force V without using save states in ePSXe!
On my real PSX I can reach all the way to the Boss before Guardian (I think it's called Fatherless Baby) but I usually lose my lock-on laser weapons during the fight, leaving me "naked" when I face the Guardian him self! :(
I still just can't get the patterns of these 2 Bosses! :(

I'll burn in the fiery pits of Shmuping Hell if I can't beat these 2 bastids!
Please help me! :(

I'm with MadSteelDarkness here. I suck but I refuse to tone down the difficulty or credit-feed.

I am pretty pathetic, often times I'm lucky to make it to stage TWO for unfamiliar shooters (keyword: unfamiliar) but with enough practice I can get farther.

As crappy as I am with shooters, I am downright horrible in other genres though. I can't beat Devil May Cry in the easiest mode. It's supposedly impossible to die in the easiest mode of Silent Hill 2. Well, I did.

I guess I'm decently good at most puzzlers though :)

this made me laugh.

me, i wouldn't say i suck per se, unpracticed and occasionally terrible, but i don't work at it. i'll play ESPgaluda, Rtype, Gradius, DDP, DOJ, and Salamander all within a week. without focusing on any one game. this creates problems with my ability to cope with attacks.

this is also not acknowledging my knack for dying stupid deaths...

well, i guess i do suck afterall... but only sometimes. :D
I have no sig whatsoever.

For which ship? If I'm correct, each ship in Giga Wing 2 starts out on a different level, followed by different level patterns.

Wait... doesn't that game has infinite continues? Beating this game requires no skill - though it takes is a massive load of patience. Read the S.A. review? :P
Nope, maybe the SNES one had infinite credits, but the Genny port had a limited number. I can't remember how many, it was a big number though. But you needed them, because you were always being shot and there was nothing to prevent it. Honestly, Revolution X is a pretty shit game (although I've never had my controller stop working like that review claims), but I had a lot of fun with my friends playing it in the arcade, and I was very excited when I found the Genesis port.

I do suck as well, but I don't care because I really enjoy playing and gradually getting better, even if it means acheving a new #10 score on the high score ranking.

I live with Kiken. You'd think this would improve my abilities, but I actually end up competing with him for console time :P [Well, when I can stay awake, that is.]

Funny thing: I never feel in the mood to shmup after he's gone to work and I'm by myself in the apartment... :? which is why having a GBA SP during lunch break at work is that much more vital
