This is on Joystiq.com as well. That's pretty scary considering how well the PS2 has done.
That's on the hardware. Sony's strategy has been to sell the system at a loss and make money on games and 3rd party licensing.dave4shmups wrote:http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3169439![]()

Yep, the Sony executives are laughing all the way to the bank with them publishing fees and royalites indeed. It ain't over yet for the PS2 console platform and it still has plenty of life left. ^_~Ex-Cyber wrote:Yeah, it's kind of a pointless benchmark. I'm sure Sony isn't hurting when you consider all the publishing fees/royalties for PS2.
Eh? I thought it was the 360 that used to have heat problems. I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard that the emotion engine generated too much heat and that that's the reason it's out. Still, at this stage of the game in the PS2's lifespan, I think it was doing better, comparatively speaking.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Yep, the Sony executives are laughing all the way to the bank with them publishing fees and royalites indeed. The same could be said for the PS2 console when it first made it's debut, SCEI was losing money on manufacturing/selling them at a loss. That is typically expected of any new gaming console hardware from the manufacturer during it's first to second year of production. As usual, profit margins on the gaming consoles themselves are very slim (or even non-existant as with the current PS3 console).
The real question should be is, how durable will the first gen PS3 consoles be in five to ten years down the road compared to the later mass produced variants? As it is, the PS3 generates massive heat and that internal cooling fan output doesn't seem quite adequate enough. Should SCEI have looked at some other exotic cooling technologies to cool down it's PS3 console?
