Any good shmup games for the PSX Pocketstation or DC VMU?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Surely there must be some good PSX Pocketstation shmup titles floating around, right? (My only gripe is that the CR2032 coin-type battery really doesn't last too long on such a Pocketstation unit...and neither does the two CR-2032 batteries on a Sega DC VMU as well. I like the crystal-clear version of SCEI's Pocketstation -- looks better than the original "white" colored Pocketstation variant that was released back in 1999 -- is cool to see the inner workings that make up the Pocketstation itself.)

What are the hardware specs on the Pocketstation & the VMU respectively?

And what about for the Sega Dreamcast's little VMU, any good mini shmup titles to play on that particular format as well?

Is it hard to create such a mini shmup title for the VMU or Pocketstation formats? (Would it take C or C+ for programming for the little buggers?)

I recall that only a handful of USA PSX game titles ever supported the Pocketstation...and that SCEA was planning to bring the Pocketstation to the USA but decided at the last minute not to...that sucks. And so, the Pocketstation remained an Japanese PSX exclusive although both the Japanese and USA PS2 consoles do have built-in support for the Pocketstation, it really wasn't supported (even though such PS2 CD-Rom or DVD-Rom discs could hold lots of Pocketstation data easily for uploading to the Pocketstations -- this feature was not used but could've been implemented quite easily from the software developers themselves.)

I remember that SCEI had plans to bring out a special PS2 Pocketstation version with color LCD screen and endowed with more internal memory but it was scrapped in favor of the upcoming PSP handheld that eventually saw the light of day in late 2004 for the Japanese market and early 2005 for the USA market..... ^_~

I think Power Stone had a VMU shmup game in it, though it's been many years since I've played it so I might be wrong.

Yes, there's a shmup game for the VMU in Power Stone. There's also one (among many mini-games) in Tech Romancer. Are either good? No. Technical limitations, my boy...

Skies of Arcadia has a VMU shmup, IIRC. It's not good, but it earns you items for the main game.

Did you need the original JPN RayCrisis release for PocketRay, or will Simple 1500 Series Vol. 75: The Double Shooting allow you access to RayPocket?

On a related note, does a PocketStation work with a region modded PS1, or do you need an original JPN PS1 to use the little fella? I'm just curious as a local store has one for sale.

For spadgy,

The Pocketstation will work on any region PSX console provided that it's capable of running either JPN or USA PSX software to d/l such Pocketstation gaming content to it.

You can use either JPN or USA regions of PSX Ray Crisis port to d/l the mini "Pocket Ray" game. However, you can't mix & match such a JPN region Pocket Ray with with USA region Ray Crisis and vice versa (as the mini game region has to match to it's respective country region PSX game of Ray Crisis in order to interface with it properly -- the CPU counts how many times such Pocket Ray was played, high score for it, etc.).

With the techincal spec of the Pocketstation's LCD screen being able to display at a simple 32 x 32 resolution, that really isn't much graphics-wise but works fine for what it can do. ^_~

SCEI would been wise to have released an upgraded color LCD-based screen PS2 Pocketstation variant...that I would've liked to have seen. ^_~

Just out of curiousity, was the PSX game of Ray Crisis ever released in Europe, spadgy?

Cheers PC-E-FX and sven. The one in the local store is like £5, so maybe I'll snap it up come payday as I'm just curious (and not expecting much) about RayPocket, and am a sucker for curious add-on and accessories.
