Will PSP shmups Sengoku Cannon & Star Soldier be in USA?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

When the Japanese versions of Sengoku Cannon & Star Soldier appear on Japanese gaming shelves later this year in July 2005, what are the odds that either one or both of them appearing for the USA PSP platform?

I already know that the PSP regardless of it's country of origin is region-free and can play any PSP game from any country but has the lockout restriction in place when it comes to playing PSP UMD movies -- only UMD movies with the proper country code will play on it. Until the day when a third-party developes a hacked PSP mod chip to allow the ability to play any region UMD movies, it really isn't that big of a deal.

I realize that Kill Bill Vol. 1 is a USA exclusive UMD movie for the American PSP platform right now and have yet to see it appear for the Japanese PSP UMD market.

It would make sense for Sony to market a home stand-alone UMD player to watch them on the "big screen" if one so wishes. That'd be a cool gadget to buy if they actually get around to doing so. Or a hacked PSP with the proper video outputs (RCA composite video / S-Video / Component Video and/or SCART/Japanese RGB outputs) would be the next logical solution instead of a dedicated stand-alone UMD player device. What do you think?

This reminds me of when NEC did make a single prototype GT handheld capable of outputting to a regular NTSC monitor. I did see it offered for sale on eBay a couple years back, the seller wanted mucho dinero for it and I passed it up (since I already have a U.S. Turbo Express with the optional Turbo Vision TV Turner Adapter...it only accepts A/V inputs but no output capability).

NEC had said that the regular production model PCE GT handheld would have A/V output capability during development phase but decided to axe that particular option in favor of saving on production costs of the GT and Turbo Express handhelds. At least the Sega Nomad handheld has the cool A/V output option if you so wish to play on the "big screen" your favorite Genesis games.

I'd say the chances aren't very good. But Gunbird 2 was released here back in the day and we're also getting Chaos Field GC so ya never know.

And man, that GT-NTSC monitor output adaptor..... Do you know how much it went for, X?

I'm not sure if the proto NEC GT with monitor output adaptor got sold or not. I did, however, e-mail the seller and he said that he was trying to sell this special NEC GT with output adaptor for a friend of his. BTW, this particular NEC GT with output adaptor was shown on Japanese TV via TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting Station) to show the Japanese public a glimpise of what the upcoming production GT was going to look like.

IIRC, this particular eBay auction for the proto GT with output adaptor was listed for about $4,000 or $5,000 U.S. dollars! (And that was just the starting price mind you.) ^_~

Facisnating tidbit on the history of the prototype NEC GT handheld that I've always wondered about being compared to a regular GT or a Turbo Express.

Maybe the UMD movies.

However, the games would be just fine on a regular TV given the PSP's 480x272 resolution- especially if 640x480 has been handled.

As for the aspect ratio being different, there could be multiple visual modes like stretch to fullscreen, letterboxed to preserve aspect ratio on a regular TV, or true widescreen.

Speaking on the behalf of UMD movies, strictly.

Actually, I am curious, is there anyway to display the output of the PSP on a TV? I really hate handhelds, but what if lots of shmups start coming out on the PSP? I will either have to get into handhelds or hope that they create a player, much like the GBA player.

Here's the rare proto PCE GT for sale on eBay...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Here's a link to the rare prototype NEC PCE GT handheld that has the A/V output (that a regular PCE GT or Turbo Express doesn't have)...and the starting price is only $500.00 U.S. dollars which isn't too bad of a deal. This is the same proto PCE GT that was shown on Japanese TBS station in early 1990. I recall buying the June 1990 issue of Video Games & Computer Enterntainment that had a several page spread about the NEC proto GT (it wasn't called the GT in the article but refered to as the TGP or Turbo Grafx Portable in short) and has some specs and even shows some pics of an early GT proto with a very different A/V I/O interface. Like I said before, NEC was planning to have the regular GT & TE have A/V output ability but axed that option at the last minute due to rising production costs. This proto GT is rarer than say a NEC PCE LT which fetches insane amounts of money on eBay because it's the only one with the A/V output capability.

I'm sure this would be of some interest to the die-hard PCE collector here on the Shmups.com forum.

I wouldn't be surprised if this proto PCE GT handheld shows up the 2005 Classic Gaming Expo's "retro gaming museum" in San Francisco on August 20th & 21st, 2005. Maybe I should buy it and show it off at the show. Check out this link for more info the CGE 2K5 show: http://www.cgexpo.com

^^

It's sexy as hell, and I sorta feel tempted, but damnit, I already have two PCE's (both RGB-modded) so I couldn't jusfity paying that much for what will end up as a curiosity item.
