STGT 2008 - Week #3 Voting (Not Taito Week)

Post by sikraiken »

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST

PLAY ALL THE GAMES FIRST BEFORE VOTING.

The Voting deadline for Week #3 is Monday, September 21st at 12:00am midnight EST (4AM GMT).
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/

Voting is completely private. Here's what you need to do.

Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the following required things:
- Your forum name
- What game you are voting for

While this is not required, please also add:
- WHY you are voting for the game you are voting for (your reason will not change the qualification of your vote, I'm just interested in seeing why people are voting for the game they choose. "I like this game" is not a reason, you can do better than that. "I like/chose this game because..." If you have trouble writing english, feel free to write in your native language.)

After you have sent your vote, you may not change your vote. You do not have to vote if you do not want to. You may not vote for other players (this also includes team mates). Your vote only counts if you send it to the e-mail address above. You must be part of STGT2008 to participate in voting. DO NOT PM me your votes.

I will be checking the votes two hours before the deadline. I will not be opening the e-mail account and looking at the votes before then. If there happens to be a tie (or one vote difference) at that point when I check them, I will announce that and extend the voting period for two more hours, allowing anyone who has not voted to have a chance to vote. I will not announce what games they are. Once there is a clear winner, the game will be announced.

Thread discussion:

DO NOT:
-Do not talk about what game(s) you are going to vote for or game(s) you are not going to vote for in this thread.
-Do not talk about what game(s) you might vote for in this thread.
-DO NOT STATE YOUR VOTE IN THIS THREAD.
(I hope this makes it clear what you should NOT talk about in this thread).

DO:
-Do ask questions about voting in general.
-Do ask questions you have about any of the games ("Why does this game suck?" is not an acceptable question, however.)
-Do ask any questions you have about the tournament.
-Do discuss anything that doesn't have to do with liking/disliking one of the game selections.
-Feel free to talk about your votes with your team outside of this thread (outside of this board).

Game Selection:

Rayforce / Gunlock

Image
Same game, different regions. Scoring seems to revolve around power up grabbing and using your lock-on weapon to its optimal ability.

Strikers 1945 III / Strikers 1999

Image
Same game, different regions. You have a charge shot with a power bar that increases over time. Coin chaining and technical bonus help your score, but just shooting stuff and getting as far as you can works as well. Secret Ship X-36 is allowed. It can be accessed by holding F2 during the game start up, going to maintenance code and then entering "01999" and pressing shot. It should say the command was enabled. It'll go back to the options and then you can go to exit. After you insert a credit and press start, go over to the random box and hold up, then press shot.

Thunder Dragon II

Image
Scoring revolves around shooting stuff quickly so more enemies come out and not dying so you get more points for point items. You can also shoot the letters at the beginning of each stage for points.

Would the Saturn versions of Rayforce/Gunlock (Galactic Attack/Layer Section) be acceptable to play?

What mame-version is allowed/recommended for Strikers 1999? Newer versions have the really annoying error-message during the final bosses, and older versions (mame 0.80) always gives you the same stage order on the first credit (you can just press F3 to get random order, but that screws up inp recording).

Curious. I've not seen that happen.

EDIT: Maybe because I'm using Mac MAME, and rarely get that far!

Seconded. I have it for Saturn (Layer Section). I cannot get the Mame version to run at all =/

Do the other games have console ports as well? (PSX or Saturn)

... I don't feel like using Mame this time 'round.

The Saturn version is easier than the arcade one. It even has separate tables on the hi-score thread.

I would assume that any of the homeports of Layer Section (Saturn, PC, Xbox or PS2) would be acceptable.

Also, RayForce is the only game this week that has a homeport. Kinda sad that we never saw a port of Strikers 1999 to the PS2 (as part of a Psikyo Collection release).

Is there a difficulty setting that matches the Saturn port to the arcade?

According to the ST, you'd have to move the difficulty on the Saturn port to 'hard 1' to match the arcade version. Someone better verify this.

I'll post later tonight about what MAME version the error first appears in for Strikers 1999 (I need to find which version...), but pressing f2 to go into the game menu and then exiting the game menu seems to change the stage order while not messing up the inp. The error isn't that noticeable if you right click the game in MAME32, click properties, then go under the miscellaneous tab and check and set "Use transparent in-game menu" to 0.

I'll check out the difficulty between Arcade / Saturn versions too for Rayforce/etc unless someone else can definitely verify it.

There's also the PS2 version on the Taito Memories/Legends compilation...presumably that one's an emulation of the arcade original, so there should be no issues, unless there's something I'm missing.

Thanks, that solved it, works fine in 0.127 now.

I think Hard 1 is arcade difficulty, but the extends are given at 500.000 and 1.000.000 instead of 1m and 1,5m (?) like in the arcade version. That means higher rank early on in the Saturn port. Also, yoko mode is different (harder to score high, IIRC) from tate mode.

Extends on the arcade version are at 1M and 2M points.

Also, in Thunder Dragon 2, destroying all the letters in the first stage will give you an item worth 50,000 points (you can bomb). And if you kill enemies quickly enough, a large ship will appear, giving you that same item if you destroy it. You have to play very agressively to make this ship appear in the later stages.

I really like all three games, but I just haven't had time to play in the tournament at all this year. Maybe this week will be different. I doubt it, though.

I've only just tried Thunder Dragon 2 for the first time, but its actually alright.

I found that destroying all the letters gives you a bomb, not that 50,000 point medal. You're definitely right about the quick kills for the large ship to appear though (with the 50,000 medal for destruction).

Destroying all the letters in the first stage will give you the medal. Stage 2 and onwards will give you a bomb.

There are plenty of occasions where the medal appears during the stage. The thread on the strategy board details some of them.

MAME .88 is the last version that doesn't display the error for Strikers 1999 on 1-8 or 2-8.

Seems like the Saturn version of Gunlock/Rayforce with difficulty setting at hard 1 would be fine. I don't have the PS2 version but I'm still looking into it (it would be fine if it is pretty much the arcade game emulated).

I get a bomb in the second stage, 50K for first. Are you using the P2 ship or something?

That is the best banner ever.

I just had to say as much. I love that, lol.

And I hadnt known about this error in Strikers..... hmm.

Ah well, I'll find a different version of Mame if I should need to, if that game gets chosen.

I think this week though, I'll be happy with any of these 3 choices.
