Looks like a Trevor Brown painting. The cover for Winter in the Belly of the Snake was also a Trevor Brown painting. Whitehouse used some of his paintings too.

Picked up a stash of quality classical vinyl for next to nothing this afternoon.

4 LPs of Chopin, mainly complete OPs of which I only have samples. Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto and a Saint-Saens LP for the missus. It's a good Saint-Saen though, the organ symphony with big blasting stabs in the final movement.

Been listening to Boris' recent album Smile a hell of a lot. Real good fun rock and roll contrasted with some cyclical-ish drone works.

Aan meets Eyes Like Saucers - Kristallivirta $10

Historic meeting between former Urdog keyboardist (Jeff K.) and Aan
(Uton + Kulkija). West meets North and mostly produces music that is
either wildly experimental or traditionally psychedelic in that Angus
MacLise sort of way. Challenging and truly bizarre!

Armpit - Tron CD $10
Consists of both the original Tron album and the Anaru EP. Something
of a free noise classic special super guest Pumice and others.
Reminds me of both Tusk and Trapdoor fucking exit but lacking both
song structure and vocals. Huge slabs of guitar noise; ranging from
'composed' loops to some pretty out-of-control nonsense. This one
definitely takes me back to why I started listening to NZ music in the
first place.

Valerio Cosi - Conference of the Aquarians CD $10

Extremely satisfying album from the ever prolific Verlerio Cosi.
There are influences of prog (Fred Frith, Henry Cow, Soft Machine)
along with European jazz to be found here, yet all under the expert
control of Mr. Cosi who I think is already established himself as one
of the most exciting new voices working in between genres.

Fabio Orsi - Audio for Lovers 2xCD $14

Second Orsi release for LVD; but Wildflowers only hints at the expanse
present in this giant album. This is the Ambient potential hinted at
by Eno, yet the whole thing sounds very modern. This one is really
beautiful, yet I guess it will still be inaccessible to most people
(why?) Orsi is another extremely prolific European artist; but this
work is my favorite so far. Perhaps another classic?

I'm just browsing the collection on emusic and I'll certainly be getting the Jack Wright album, as well as a few others. Jack Wright sounds like an extension of Braxton's solo work but more up front and with a thicker tone. Inspiring stuff for a budding alto player for sure.

I'm majoring in classical music so I am always listening to something classical.

Right now it's Manuel Barrueco's "300 Years of Guitar Masterpieces", colloquially "The Vox Box". Loads of *fantastic* classical guitar, really one of the best albums ever.

As far as non-classical: Kraftwerk's Autobahn. Love it.

I started doing that free-improv side-label thing for a while, but it really sold miserably. Both the Wright and the Marsh are fantastic CDs (I recommend checking out work by both artists; and Wright himself is a bit of a legend), but they both sold really horribly, and I've retreated back to just my standard NZ and European weirdness that sells the usually dismal 300 copies or so; but enough to break even and keep going.

Hadn't listened to this forever (mostly something from the college days); still about the weirdest (yet fun) that Byrne ever did. Mostly strange, funky instrumentals akin to My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

Very unfortunate.

Today I had a marathon listening session and listened to all 3 CDs of the Birchville Cat Motel album. Very enjoyable and quite immersive. Reminds me of a busier version of some of Greg Davis' drone work, especially stuff off Somnia. It cranked up to semi-harsh at points too which I liked.

Also listened to the Ashtray Navigations album which really is top draw stuff. Lots going on. Almost freak-folky in places. I hadn't heard of these guys before but I think I'm going to be doing some homework.

I also got Eyes Like Saucers album but haven't listened to that yet other that to sample the Robert Wyatt cover. Look forward to hearing it through.

Expect and order for some CDs when I am in full time employment. Redundancy + temping = poor Stuart.

I'm intrigued, what cut will you get from eMusic from my purchases?

The new Squarepusher...

"This album started as a daydream about watching a crazy, beautiful rock band play an ultra-gig.

At first, a giant fluorescent image of a coat hanger appeared at the back of the stage. A couple of seconds later a full size replica of the Camden Falcon backroom materialised around the glowing coat hanger. Upon the stage was a group composed of five musicians.They seemed to be of differing ages, some young, some old. I noticed that the drummer was an Eskimo. They played instruments either of their own design or conventional ones that were modified such that they could be used to generate a range of sounds not typically associated with a rock band. For instance, one of the musicians appeared to be using a device attached to the body of his classical guitar that allowed him to accelerate or decelerate time in his immediate vicinity.

At a certain point he seemed to quickly reverse back to a couple of months ago. My suspicions were corroborated by his hair and beard temporarily looking rather shorter. Sonically, this had the effect of extruding certain melodic phrases into shimmering monoliths and slow emotion wave fronts. Other sounds being generated near to him on stage also got partially sucked into the time sponge and were returned at high speed as imploded sonic pin cushions.

The coat hanger started glowing emerald green..."

This album is something like the first time I heard Purple Rain almost, if that sounds dumb then forget it, but damn, ok

Squarepusher - Just a Souvenir - I think you're right, szycag, this album's awesome. The last few times I've seen him live, my ears almost fell off, and he called everyone a cunt. This is a most unexpected turn, but a brilliant one nonetheless. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this is up with Portishead's 'Third' on my favourite albums of 2008
