STGT08 Week 2: Thoughts
STGT08 Week 2: Thoughts
Dangun Feveron... hm, I think ultimately it was the best choice for the Caravan week. I voted for the Game Parodise anyhow, but hell there'da been a lotta bitchin' bout those shadows.
Pretty fun to learn how to score in this game. It occurred to me halfway through my scoring journey that the 4 speed is best because 'bullet herding' was the prime technique to dodging bullets and collecting discomen. I tried to play this without sound earlier today and was doing horrible. You gotta get with the groove, I guess! I kept thinking that I had to use the secondary attack (the missles for the bomb type) to get some chain multiplier so I'm afraid that probably slowed me down a bit (but they proved to be powerful.)
Using the PS2 pad again and man, my thumb got a bit sore after slamming through 8 or so credits in a row.
Well, how'd it go folks?

Overall, it was pretty fun to blaze through this game. It's one of Cave's finest and isn't really anal, though I gotta hand it to ya, Aquas. You sure packed a li'l punch for our team. I was holding first place for us as if no one was gonna play, but lo and behold, the team comes!
Yeah. Guh-roovy playin' for me!
Also worth mentioning is that I got my high score listening to SOMETHING ELSE. =O

I didn't get to play as much as I'd have liked, but I had fun with it on the few credits that I did play. I broke 1,000,000 pretty quickly, but ~1.2-1.3 million was just a total wall for me. I'm sure I could have made at least 1.5 if I didn't make so many mistakes, but it's so hard to play a whole run without messing up. It can definitely get frustrating.
I DID enjoy the fact that then only penalty to dying was losing that wave of enemies to destroy (and powerups but they were everywhere). It wasn't so much dying that frustrated me, but losing a discoman (but ultimatly you shouldn't restart your run if this happens because learning ship patterns was pretty important) I was also very liberal with my bomb usage starting out, then discovered the good places to use them like clearing out those powerup ship formations near the latter half of the run. Also, getting used to it, I began to know where I could die, and sometimed I'd just die so I could get some more bombs to clear the mundane enemies outta the way for the discomen loaded ones. The beginning 30 seconds seem pretty integral to a solid score, however.

I was really bad at this game to start with, then I figured it out and still struggled. Playing it over the week I made a lot of progress and eventually broke 800,000 which still isn't very impressive.
I guess the game itself is alright, probably my least favorite Cave game i've played. The choice of different options is really cool, but i've not a huge fan of the game design. I like the idea of the time attack mode and I think more games should have that feature.
However I am so completely sick of this game's time attack mode and I never want to play it again.

If it's any indication, I said "Fuck this game and everyone who voted for it" in the hi score thread
But in all seriousness, I don't intend to play this game's time attack mode again. It was wasn't enjoyable from the start, and just got less so as the week wore on. By Wednesday, I'd pretty much made up my mind it was nothing but a chore to play through. And when a game gets that way while having little to no fun or enjoyability to me, it's not likely to be played again.
I'm not joking when I say XDR for the MegaDrive is in better standings with me.

I really did enjoy it, though I didn't have enough time to put in. I too am a big fan of caravans, but this left me with a really strong desire to try the main game mode. That might fill my voting week I guess.
Overall, glad to be introduced to a fantastically manic caravan that felt reasonably close to what Star Soldier carvans I've played.

I voted Varth then Game Tengoku and got neither. (Not that I had any playing time those weeks, but those games would have suited me).
Happens every year, the games I want never get chosen. Only two out of 10 game weeks since STGT06 have gone the way I voted
- Blazing Star and Batrider.

You pretty much echoed my sentiments. By about Wednesday, I had hit a wall and the game was just becoming more aggravating to play. There's only so much anger I can put up with while score chasing. The Coop wrote:If it's any indication, I said "Fuck this game and everyone who voted for it" for the hi score thread

I didn't play this for long enough to get sick of it; or, perhaps I just have a higher tolerance than others for repeated failure.
Altogether I put in around 4.5 hours, broken down roughly into a 2 hour, and two 1h15min sessions. With a day or two between each sitting, that was hardly enough time to even begin getting pissed at this game. Also, I would normally switch it off as soon as the deaths got really silly - an indication my concentration was drifting.
It would be interesting to hear who experienced the longest single session this week, and what their views on Dangun's caravan mode are. Come on, don't be shy.
Edit: Oh yeh, I voted Game Tengoku.

Nice to see a replay from sikraiken.
Great work with the tournament also, all involved.
Namakoteam owns us all, again! That really bugs me. I think the top-7 (excluding namako of course) should get together next year and once and for all defeat you guys.
I'm keeping count of the non-participate competition by the way. I think Twiddle is gonna win that one!.
What's up with SDA?

I actually thought it was the worst from the start (I voted for Game Tengoku). The scoring is incredibly reliant on anal memorization and dropping a single discoman means your run is finished. It wasn't bad, but I don't want to play the game again.Aquas wrote:Dangun Feveron... hm, I think ultimately it was the best choice for the Caravan week.
Game Tengoku would have been a lot more relaxed IMO, since the item chaining is pretty lenient, you get plenty of bombs, and killing everything is pretty easy.
Macross II also would have been fun, lots of scoring secrets in that game.
I have to say I'm glad everyone is a lot more civil this year. Or maybe it's the fact that Twiddle and Shoe-sama banned and we played a Cave game this week so Gaijinpunch won't bitch until next week.
DMC: I don't know

I was gonna vote Macross but I'm leading in the voting non-participation competition. Every week I knew would be a blowout so why bother?
Speaking of which, I found a post I'm sure you'll enjoy: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=22122 Is there anyone on this forum as clueless in general as GP? Thankfully I can't really say since I don't read off-topic, trading, or Cave box collecting threads.
We're actually in the same place as last year if you exclude the fact that sik has teammates now, lol.

Now, bearing in mind that I was recording every run from the start, the ratio of restarts:completions is roughly around 11:1, LOL.

Same for me I think, mostly.
I cant memorize stuff whatsoever, but I've always liked Dangun quite a bit.
Though I've mostly played the normal mode.... not the time-attack, so I didnt score very well. But it was enjoyable nonetheless.
