Nexzr, Sidearms Special, and Rayxanber II came in the mail yesterday.

I may sell Nexzr because it isn't in the great condition (how much would it go for? This is the normal version, not the Summer Carnival), but the other two are ace.

Too bad no PC-Engine Duo R to play them on yet. :(

MUST get (IMO of course):

Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (simply the most brilliant game in the series on any platform. Really two games in one as there are the alternate levels to finish)

Kaze Kiri: Ninja Action (with Revenge of Shinobi - I still can't figure out which is one and which is two - as the best ninja game ever designed by man. how in the hell they squeezed all those moves into two buttons I still can't fathom but it's a must get)

Sylphia (I am still sure this is made by Compile although it's hotly debated. Take Compile's brilliance and take the shmup out of the bland space theme and you have this gorgeous Greek themed shooter)

Summer Carnival '93: Nexzr Special (strips out the crap and leaves the cream - ROCK hard and damn good shmup)

Seirei Senshi Spriggan (just good)

Winds of Thunder (VASTLY superior to the butchered Mega/Sega CD release)

And I have to say that Super Long Nosed Goblin is imo the best cute-em-up on the PCE. I really like it, much more than Coryoon, although that wasn't bad.

Kaze Kiri is a more advanced Kung-Fu

I find it boring and repetitive, well worth trying before you shell out the money asked for this game.

Overated IMHO.

"Summer Carnival '93: Nexzr Special"

This is better than the more expensive normal version? What are the differences?

Damn... wish I had known that sooner. Thanks for the suggestions though! :D

It's not per se better, it just gets rid of the cinemas in the original and adds a time/boss attack mode (it's been a while since I've played the game as I've moved around and most of my retro stuff is still boxed - the shame  - so I can't double check that but that's the difference to the best of my recollection)

Gotcha.

Well, my copy of Nexzr is in less than desirable shape... so once I get a few more PC-Engine games I'll probably sell it and see what I can do about snagging the Summer Carnival version. I did get Summer Carnival: Alzadick though. :)

Really thinking about Rayxanber III, Long Nosed Goblin, and possibly Sylphia now (though that one is a bit pricey). I guess if I can't get my deposit on Sapphire down (which, if the bank don't refund me soon, that may happen, damn my being paid bi-weekly!) I may just snag a bunch of little cheap PC-Engine games. Definitely itching to see how Wonder Boy fared on there.

Wonder Boy: Monster Lair is awesome. Dynastic Hero is Wonder Boy V / III part 2 (love the names of those games) with better music, cinemas, voice, and... the main character in a stupid looking beetle suit. Hrm. I still think it's a better version of the game, but the beetle suit... why?

I've never played Wonder Boy in Monster Lair for the PCE. They changed around the sprites to make it part of the Bikkuriman series. Wonder Boy III Dragon's Curse is really, really good. It's like the Master System version but prettier. Also, you can save the game to the system memory~ Hurrah, no passwords.

The real final entry in the Monster World series is Mega Drive only... no ports exist for any other systems as far as I know.

Cool! I got that one for like $10 and even better, I got me a complete US Magical Chase for another tenner on the same day. Two of the best games on the system. That kinda thing is really all that I miss about having a brick and mortar shop.

LOL, please realize that in the case of the PCE, six buttons are NOT better than two. The d-pads on those six button pieces of shit suck hairy dog balls and the only games that are compatible with them suck even more. I should know, I thought it'd be neato if I spent the extra coin for a Duo RX. I still have the system but I never use the pad. Because of the aforementioned sucking. Hairy dog balls.

Also, every single ACD game sucks. Just so you'll know beforehand.

In your opinion, I reckon?
Sapphire´s a great and very stylish shooter, but the pricetag alone keeps a lot of people from ever trying it out.

Parasol Stars is by far the one I return to the most.
Excellent game with ingenious gameplay mechanics and overall good atmosphere.
Also known as Bubble Bobble III.
Rainbow Islands (Bubble Bobble II) is pretty good also.

Pricetag, schmicetag. Trying it out is as easy as burning a CD. What about the gameplay? Just because it's a shooter doesn't mean it's good. Britney Spears is very stylish as well.

Very true. But as I already mentioned, I think the gameplay´s great.
Not because it´s a shooter and not because it´s expensive.
It´s a great game IMO.
You, on the other hand, don´t like it. Not much to say about that, is there?

Fatal Fury Special PCE owns the Snes and Sega CD versions. Owns them with a capital "P". Most faithful port of the original, ever.

You might want to try out Download & Kiadian 00 for PCE.

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

NEC released a cool but hard shmup under the name of "Download" and is a Japnese Hu-Card. The first time I saw the hilarious "engrish-style" swearing...I was laughing my ass off. This game would never been released in the USA for the TG-16 in it's current Japanese Rom version...but then again, it was never released in the USA period.

The second shmup is a rare Super CD-Rom2 title by the name of "Kiadan 00" that features a very cool anime opening intro that's good enough to sign to if you understand Japanese (that reminds me of the PSX shmup game import of "Geppy X-70's Robot Anime").

Actually, (Tengai Makyo) Kabuki Itouryodan is a great ACD game now that I think of it also.

I actually quite enjoy that shmup. Controls well and is a lot of fun even for those of that don't know Japanese. Runs about $70ish mint and complete .

The ACD version of Strider is supposed to be excellent and have an extra level that no other version of Strider has. I've never played it.

Mad Stalker is a fun (but a bit simplistic) mech bashing action game. Really cheap and worth it if you have an Arcade Card.

Sapphire is one of the best 16 bit shmups I've ever played but it's too damn expensive. If you're rich or crazy (I fall into the latter category) it's worth it.

I don't know what crackhead told you ACD Strider was "excellent" but I would advise you stop listening to him immediately. ACD Strider is a TRAVESTY. Crappy animation and BRUTALLY sloppy controls leave this version leagues behind the excellent Mega Drive port. The only thing it has going for it is the music, which is excellent given the CD format.

Mad Stalker is okay but if you don't have an Arade Card it's certainly not good enough to buy one for.

Sapphire is an excellent piece of technical wizardry, but as a shmup it's decidedly average, certainly well below the PCE creme de la creme. As has been mentioned before, pick up a backup of the game before you lay out all the jack. I'm still on the fence on whether this is worth it in my collection given the price atm.

Well... my game/random stuff I want budget per month is about $700, so snagging Sapphire isn't a problem financially.

Anyways, what I'm really looking for from the PC-Engine/PC-Engine CD are games like Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Blast Wind, etc. that aren't stupidly hard, and in fact, are somewhat easy, but are still fun to sit down and play through. I get way too frustrated when I'm trying to play Saturn/DC shmups late at night and I keep having stupid deaths early on because I'm incredibly tired, and I'm just looking for something that I can kick back, play through, smile, and go on my way despite my mind state. :)

*Note: Yes yes, I know, Rayxanber II is stupidly hard, thats why I got it though. That and the kickass art style*

Also, I heard Sapphire had "unfair" gameplay, and I was wondering about that.

The MVS cart is cheaper than the friggin Arcade card! And why in the world would anyone play that game on a SNES or a Sega CD? Actually, that game was booty in the first place.

All those other ACD games mentioned to try to shoot down my expert opinion are crap. Especially Strider. Don't get me started. Buy a Playstation.

As far as Sapphire goes... It's boring. Pop n Twinbee for the SNES shits on it for the low low price of six bucks. Talk about stylish 8)

"Mad Stalker is okay but if you don't have an Arade Card it's certainly not good enough to buy one for."

There is a Playstation version ya know. And it's just as bland as the PCE one.

I loves me some TG16/PCE but I'm always amazed at the way some folks just want to cling to the same old crapola whilst works of genius like Sylphia and Fray Xak Gaiden go pretty much unmentioned. Bar81 gets a delicious cookie for mentioning Kiaiden 00 :)
