Every ExteNDS

Post by Frederik »

This is pretty cool:

http://ee.meushi.com/#

A homebrew Every Extend port for the DS!

I mean, we already have this game on the PSP, but I hate loading times, and this is pretty well done so far. It also saves highscores and has a replay function as well as WiFi-leaderboards. I forgot how enjoyable the original is, I didn´t really like the Q?-ified version of it, too much distracting stuff.

Besides, this really asked for a DS port, as it´s perfect for being on a handheld.

I thought i was the only one playing this
So far my Score is around 1,6m, IIRC.
How can they pull off scores beyond 50m? oO

My hi is about 2,5 mil. I´m still not really sure if one of the scoring elements is more crucial than the others, but I noticed that first making a huge chain with lots of green bonus crystals and then try to pick up as many as possible (kinda like medal chaining) has a noticable effect on the score. Also, making large chains during the boss fight is much more effective than killing him quickly, I usually just let him time out.

Oh, and if I remember this right, when you´re on the 5th Quicken item, if you directly pick up the 6th then the next ones won´t appear, you rather have to wait till the 6th, 7th and 8th appear on the screen and then collect them (I also got a 9th one on two occasions, don´t know how, though).

What I really like is that you have to balance getting the Quicken quickly, making big chains and collect a lot of bonus items at once, but I still don´t see how people get these big scores.

On the sites ranking a guy named NEKOYA sits on the first three spots, with 50, 45 and 37 mil, but the max chain (It says "chains", though, maybe it really is the number of chains and not the max chain???) is 51, 148 and 38, so it varies wildly. But he always has a LOT of stock ships (140, 130, 154). Too bad that the WiFi replay download doesn´t work for me, I´d really love to see what is going on here.

True, true. Not that the DS lacks any "shooting love" at the moment but having rRootage or Gunroar in dual screen tate would definitely rock.
I just love the dual screen boss fights in Space Invaders Extreme

This is the original Every Extend ported to DS rather than an attempt at Every Extend Extra isn't it?

Yeah. Also: Warning Forever DS pleeze.

Also, after a few days playing EE I noticed that after the initial fun it gets very irritating when I´m trying to play more seriously. Maybe it´s the kinda passive way of playing, but now I can´t stand it anymore :?

I couldn't get any Wifi stuff to work (I guess I need different router settings for homebrew stuff), but I think I've figured out how to get those 10+ million scores.

First, the easy part. Get your first 5 quickens as fast as you can. If you get the fourth one in time, 2 enemies will appear instead of one and will give you 2 time extends which you may or may not need.

Now the tricky part. On your 5th quicken, you will have to collect 6 more quickens, making a total of 11. 10 is not enough, and 12 is too much that it 'loops back' and acts as if you have 0 when you get to the boss. Remember that once you grab a quicken at this point, they will stop spawning. I usually wait for 3 or 4 pink boxes to appear on the screen, and then attempt to herd them into the middle while waiting for the last few to appear. Also, if you time it right, you can grab a quicken just as another pink box is created.

Once you have 11, now the fun can begin! Wait 'til you get to the boss (with 11 quickens, it appears at 50 seconds). When you get there, you'll see a whole lot of boxes, so blow 'em up. Watch as the sides continually explode and the FPS counter drops to 10. Your stock will rise to triple digits, and your max chain will keep climbing to 1000 and then resetting.

Make sure to keep the boss away from any exploding edges by manipulating its direction. It tends to travel to your opposite side. And I'm not sure about this, but toward the end when 1 second is left, if you destroy yourself, the explosions will continue after time has run out.

Whenever I tried this, the max chain counter never read anything past triple digits unless I got triple digits in the 'stage' portion. I guess that explains the low chain numbers on the scoreboard.

Heh, now I can't help wondering if the original and PSP versions have this scoring 'method' or if it's just the homebrew port... (edit: probably just this port, the quickens in the original move faster)

Interesting. Is the PSP game worth getting with the 360 one out on XBLA?

Don't get the 360 one. They messed it up. You get like 15 seconds of invincibility every time you get a new ship... it's just bad.

The game is kinda interesting and a nice little distraction from the other DS stuff.

I am gonna try out Kyper´s "11 Quicken" method before I´ll put this little time thief down

BTW. diagonal movement seems to be way faster than travelling on the X or Y axis...

I didn't realize that this wasn't in Every Extend Extra. I may have to pick up the game for my PSP then. I played the XBLA version for about a week, and never played it again. Probably should sometime - I was digging the last mode that actually resembled a classic shooter.

If this DS version lets you get more than eight Quickens, then it is less a "port" and more a "customisation" of the PC version.
And in my opinion Extra is still the definitive version. Extreme is fun as you can generate difficulty with different music tracks - the faster the BPM, the harder it is to score. This version isn't bad though.

Thanks a lot, that explains a lot. I got around 9 Quickens by accident once, I didn´t know that you can get more than eight, because that´s what it is like in the PSP version. I´ll try this out :)

EDIT: I got to 10 Quickens once, and yeah, the chains at the boss got HUGE.
