I personally prefer FInal Fantasy III on SNES. Easily my favorite RPG game ever.

i don't. FF VI was _clearly_ superior to FF III on the SNES

Thanks to this thread I got back to Phantasy Star 4. For a long time I wanted to beat it, and finally did it.

Now, there are so many references in it to Phantasy Star 1, I feel like playing it next. I really wish there was an english translation of PS1 Generation, because it looks great. Searched a lot on the web but couldn't find anything.

Guess I'll have to play the Master System version.

Terranigma (action RPG like Zelda), Lufia II (faster-paced than many other JRPGs - I've finished it in two sittings when sick).

You could try a fan-translation of Final Fantasy IV on the SNES if you prefer slower games. I don't have the patience for them any more.

That is a really superb game. Definitely one of the best RPGs on the system. Some other interesting and fun Genesis RPGs include Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun (interesting prehistoric jungle setting, cool monsters, and fun first person dungeons) and Shadowrun (very unique mechanics, interesting setting, very customizable).

FFIV was remade more times than FFVI.

plus, it's a better game IMO. the japanese version is ridiculously hard [plus, edge looks like he's flipping the bird to the monsters while in the battle :P].

but i'm happy for whomever said illusions of gaia. that game takes me back.

and if you can find a good psx emu, get valkyrie profile. that game was way ahead of it's time. plus, i heart it to death.

I agree with both of you.
Maybe we're talking about the same game.

Final Fantasy VI = Final Fantasy III in the USA

The original Final Fantasy III is a completly different game for the NES and only available in japanese.

Two pages of 16bit goodness and no mention of Star Ocean yet. Since I haven't played any of them, and First Departure is coming (and poor PSP feels lonely), what's your take on Ocean? It's born from a rib of Phantasia (another one I haven't played) which do you think is more accomplished of the two?

That's the version released on the PS1 compliation w/Chrono Trigger, right? If so, I didn't find it THAT hard...harder than the original US release/easy version, but manageable (and the rule still applies, if I can beat it, so can anyone).

I feel like Phantasia is more playable on emulator without a gamepad. I played both when the fan-translations (and fixes to make emulation possible) were initially released. I never made it very far in Star Ocean, but I made it most of the way through the game in ToP.

They feel pretty similar to me - Star Ocean is more unusual in its subject matter, but the battle system feels less usable. This might be corrected using a gamepad.

Probably since the two games were started by the same people...
