What will happen to the Xbox, when the Xbox 360 comes out?

Post by Nei First »

At least when the Saturn and Dreamcast died in the west it had plenty of support from the east.
The Xbox doesn't have that advantage over in the east, definatly not the advantage Playstation has, not sure about the Game Cube. So do you think smaller western developers will still be making games on it, or even some eastern developers? Or will it just be abandoned totally?

I've been reading that MS will probably cease manufacturing of Xboxes when they launch X360. If true, they probably aren't planning to support Xbox for much longer. Seems MS's all about X360 now.

The number of Xbox 1 games is already decreasing rapidly. It'll be like a usual system changeover except faster. 2006 will almost certainly be the last year for XBox 1 games... whereas we'll probably see scattered PS2 stuff until at least mid 2007, and budget releases well through 2008 and 2009. Just look at the PS1, games for that are still on store shelves.

As far as Shoot Em Ups go, the X-Box was a very "Dry" system, it wont be missed by most shooter fans.

The box it self, did have a Saturn look though.

The X-Box will burn in the fiery pits of hell with Dr. Betruger!

I'd say good riddance......

It will probably become obsolite because it does not have the Japanese support. It won't be missed too much by some shmups fans since there weren't any or it.

What I want to know is what will happen to Xbox Live when MS deems the Xbox obsolite.

It's so cool that microsoft cares for their X-Box customers by offering backwards compatibility on the X-Box 360.

Most of the Xbox content worth owning was franchise stuff, therefore I feel that with upgraded hardware comes sequels for just about 90% of the back catalog and you know what that means historically speaking.

Xbox is tailored towards PC converts with a onslaught of FPS games.

Personally I cannot understand why with 25 franchises of FPS games, that half of the decent exclusive content on the machine is actually also FPS games (Halo, Doom 3, Wolfenstein etc). Perfect Dark Zero adding to that on the 360, along with Gears of war!

I remember seeing a list of the top 35 games or so, and I think only one or two non FPS made the top 8.

Xbox does not just have crap games, but its appeal is very distinguished towards Western tastes, so it draws some people in whilst completely alienating the rest. The quality of the games is actually of a very high standard, I just can't stand the types of games that are on it (bar about 5).

My favorite X-Box games:

Dead or Alive 3
House of The Dead 3 ?
Ninja Gaiden
Otogi Myth of Demons
Panzer Dragoon Orta

I've only played DOA3 & NG at a shop for 5-10 minutes.
But I don't really know how good they play....
Are they any good?

I also tried Halo 1 & 2, but found the controls horrible & let a another kid play.
;)

The X-Box did have some values how ever...
In my previous job we used to install mod chips & service X-box, PS-1/2, Saturn etc...
The X-Box does have a very sturdy & PC look from the inside. You can drop it down & even brake 1 or 2 fuses from the PCB & it will still work!

Where as the PS-2 has a very cheap & weak PCB & the plastic can be snapped very easily. Mistakes are not very well tolerated by the PS-2. The slightest wrong connection can send it flaming to the fiery pits of console hell!

The X-Box will die, it's that simple - to be replaced with the upgraded version with new versions of all the same games to come. That's what the mainstream market wants to buy these days.

X-Box Live will survive, they've already stated this, with your Live account being usable on the 360. There are silver and gold x-box live accounts, from the descriptions - what we currently have equates to gold service. Silver is purely for software updates, be they patches or content.

I'll be getting a 360. I love my arcade gaming, but I also like to race/kill my friends online, and I don't want the hassle of PC gaming. This is why the 360 should do pretty well, no other console and not even the PC, offers such a cohesive online setup. Sony need to think about what Microsoft did right, because their online offering was extremely weak in comparison, and the people who play console games online seriously, know it.

It's a shame they're not saying 100% backwards compatability - I would put real money on Lockdown being one of the ones that will run on the 360 too - this is Ubisofts endlessly delayed (so they could get crap games out of the door first) big hitter. Also expect Halo 2, I'm hoping for Midnight Club 3, Forza should be in there if sim driving is your thing.

J Allard is an idiot if there is not 100% backwards compatibility. That alone would be a major selling point for some folks (like me, I still don't have an XBox but want one and have to borrow an XBox from a friend to play my copy of Orta :P ) If they leave only some compatible, Sony would have a pretty decent point to boast with the PS3 which plays all PS games from the last two gens. Why not just go all the way and make a full XBox1 emu?

My (hopeful) guess is that MS and Allard are just being dodgy with the backwards compatibility thing until 360's launch gets closer as a way to prolong XBox 1 sales for as long as possible.

Also, anyone read a rumour that they'd offer two units at launch: one with full backwards compatibility which costs a little more and one with none/partial that is cheaper?
