Anyone here play Warhammer 40k?
My gf brother is into this hardcore. Like sits around on a friday night painting figures when he's not wanking to fantasy art. I'm really diggin the art and design of the figurines and shit, but thats just a level of geekiness I can't relate to. Plus, I heard you gotta spend like big $$$ jsut to start playing.

When i first read this thread i thought it was going to be about the C&C clone.
I used to collect and paint various Games workshop products back in the very early nighties. they were stupidly expensive then and they are now there's a lot other games like this out there with cheaper models.
I think there's a lot more cooler things to aint out there than 40K stuff but then ive grown kinda distant from all that im more in to Japanese artists and stuff. I have always wanted to get one of them Facehugger replica model kits and make it from scratch. I think painting it would be awesome fun (specifically the mouth vagina)
as for playing it! yeah back when i was playing it you needed a good 100GBP starter army just to get started but you would need another 150GBP worth of misc stuff just to flesh it out a bit. And you could get another 100GBP worth just to have a bit of variation so people you play on the regualr cant devlop tactics against you.
Or just get necomunda it was a chaep buy in at just 15GBP for a starter clan and you could flesh it out with another 20GBP as you went along if you were playing a campaign
these prices are from way back in the day I would imagine it would be double now
and for kids thats a lot of pocket money

I played for a while several years ago. The time and cost of preparing a sizeable collection that allows you to use any kind of strategy at all was far too prohibitive.
When you have to paint 20+ of the same thing just to get started, you stop caring and do a crap painting job and just end up with something that you aren't really proud of at all (after having spent $$$ on it). I basically have only one foot soldier that I spent a lot of effort to paint, and I don't want to do it again.
And yeah, super geeky.

I just want to say that Dawn of War and C&C are absolutely nothing alike aside from being in the same genre. I found the gameplay more similar to Starcraft than C&C, by far.Lordstar wrote:When i first read this thread i thought it was going to be about the C&C clone.

i used to be well into it, from warhammer 40k, necomunda, advanced space crusade, blood bowl, man o war, space fleet and all the other various games workshop products i bought into over the years.
but yeah its far too expensive, you can still get the metal figures but they cost stupid money (plus the plastic ones look better now)
best thing about 40k though is the background. probably the darkest universe ever thought up.
some of the novels are quite good too
tbh from a gaming perspective the games are too simple and the cost is unbelievable (above estimates are correct, small 1000 point army costs aprox £100)
at the end of the day its marketed at young teens these days with their parents disposable income (which is funny because when i was first into it the figures were made of lead and you had to be over 14 to buy them)

It's a fun game, but waaaay too expensive for my tastes. If you play as the space marines, a certain tank costs you $50! $50 for a a shoddy plastic toy you have to put together and paint yourself. That's messed up.
This is not similation. Get ready to destoroy the enemy. Target for the weak points of f**kin' machine. Do your best you have ever done.
I played quite a lot but that was a long time ago when the game didn't come in a box with simplified stupid friendly rules. It was a just one big fooking hardback manual, like a sodding phone book, with tables which indexed into tables and all kinds of shit. And you had to get everything seperate. Fortunately though the models where actualy affordable then. You could get the bulk of your armies for a reasonable price in these massive sprew boxes which contained a shed load of dudes you could pose how you wanted rather than having to buy everything in packs of 5 identical models at a time for 20 quids a pop or whatever rediculous price they try to extract out of kids parents these days.

well i was just using the type of game rather than the complexities about it. But yeah C&C,Dawn of war,Dune, starcraft ect.kengou wrote:I just want to say that Dawn of War and C&C are absolutely nothing alike aside from being in the same genre. I am suprised someone has not tried to compress the whole thing in to a game. A propper table top wargame computergame. becuase all it comes down to in the end it Objects which represent things, a rule book and die rolls.

Im just saying that im suprised no ones made some homebrew game. I hate the company as a whole. I recall back in 98 I bought a D&D book at a bookshop and then went to games workshop to see what was going on with the tyranids (my 40K army of choice back in the day) and I had a member of staff ask me to leave when i asked why they said I was brining non games workshop product in to the store (in a white carierbag but if you looked hard enough you could see it was a D&D book) When i asked to see the manager I was told he was the manager and he was deadly serious I dont think ive bought a single thing from that store since then.
bad thing is games workshop established its company on selling other peoples wargames including TSR (people who make/made D&D at the time)

i remember a kid of about 10 ears old being asked to leave gw in the metro centre. He had an orc warhammer army but also had in his box a star wars gamorian figure painted up as a giant.
he was literally manhandled in tears out of the shop
they are such a weird company, did you know that there are roleplaying games of both warhammer and 40k (fully licenced) but they refuse to sell them in their main shops as it doesnt fit in with their store image?
mind you i would mind shares in them
plus they have a bar in their head office that sells some fantastic ales mmmm

I luuurve 40k. I'd still collect/play if I had the money/time/space/friends. I have a friend who works at a school and runs a gaming club for the kids, he took me to Warhammer World a few weeks before I left England. Its pretty cool, just a giant games workshop with a bar.
Me and my bro originally decided we wanted to get into 40k because we loved Laser Squad and X-Com so much.

Like BattleTech has MegaMek? I'd be all over that. 40K looks interesting, but spending all that money and time and going to the trouble of meeting up with people to play against guarantees that I'll never try it.Lordstar wrote:Im just saying that im suprised no ones made some homebrew game.
Yeah I think if they striped it down and made another X-com game like the first and terrors from the deep it would be awesome. not table top just a computergame. But yeah you could make X-com campaigne just like necromunda.Sly Cherry Chunks wrote:Me and my bro originally decided we wanted to get into 40k because we loved X-Com so much.

there was the old space hulk game and the old space crusade games that did exactly that take a gw board game and make a computer version.
there was also a game called rites of war that used the panzer generals engine but you controlled an eldar army from 40k
and a game called warhammer 40,000 final liberation that let you battle with titans and tanks,
all a bit dated but worth checking out if you are interested

I'm pretty into Blood Bowl. I play by e-mail against a friend of mine (I win the nerd award). I'm also entering into the Chaos Cup (big North American tournament) in a few weeks or so. The novelty of fantasy monsters playing football is high, and I like the goal-oriented tactical nature of the sports aspect of it.
yeah it was pretty big when they had the second edition in the UK but tipical of gameswork shop as soon as they get some thing new they drop all support for the older games. I used to play it but never had my own team. I was pretty good got pretty high in my high schools gaming club league. oh god blast from the past i recall setting up the gaming club in my second year of high school. now thats nerdy

The PC version of Space Crusade wasn't bad. I didn't like the two Space Hulk FPS-hybrds, but there was a fun fan-made adaption of the board game called Space Hulk-SP. I haven't played it in a long time, though, and it seems to have disappeared off SourceForge.mr_m0nks wrote:there was the old space hulk game and the old space crusade games that did exactly that take a gw board game and make a computer version.
None of those are adaptions of the 40K game itself, though.
I used to play 40k, back towards the end of first edition, and then quit soon after second ed came out. The first thing I bought was a giant box of several dozen plastic generic Eldar troops with a few bonus things and some terrian, with the big ol' hardback rulebook. It was $60 US. Not too bad, considering that later on individual tanks, made of plastic, the size of my fist, ended up costing the same amount.
Actually, I mostly just liked to paint the figures, and ended up buying the figures that I wanted to paint instead of the ones necessary for a good army... I never did get very good at actually playing.
Go go Harlequin Eldar!
