fave music in a shooter

Post by espibara »

I would have to say I really like the soundtracks to Mars Matrix, Mushihimesama and ESPgaluda.

Worst soundtrack tho is XII Stag, god the music is awful.

ESPgaludas soundtrack is awesome, makes me want to get my glowsticks out, just suits the theme of the game so well.

edit: I don't listen to game soundtracks or buy them though, thats hella gay.

especially listening to the galuda one without playing it. hah

I'm afraid I'd have to list too much, but if going by the amount of favorite tracks per game, it's Gradius III and V, Darius Gaiden, and some Touhou games.

Boss themes from Cave games require a honorable mention, by far the most catchy boss music selection overall (some of them still suck a lot, though).

EDIT: Just thought about it, playing shooters is hella gay.

Everything Kou Hayashi and Daisuke Nagata have worked on, including all of Milestone's games, and Zanac Neo.

R-type's First stage musis, it gets me pumped up for some reason.
Blue Wish Ressurection, Stage 1, See above
Raystorm's soundtrack
Ikaruga, Ideal
Imperishable Night Eirin's theme
Off topic example: Metal Slug, Final Attack

Late Addition:

R-type Delta Stage 7, Fate

Indeed! Both Garegga and Batrider have very good soundtrack.

Though I can't understand the Espgaluda hype as well. Maybe because I hate trance, but it's even not like it's some high quality trance either…

I'm going to have to say Guwange, Ikaruga, Ketsui, and Batrider. I actually don't really care for the music in Espgaluda games. As someone mentioned in another thread its not even good trance. :D I just can't get into the Mushihimesama series' music.

...oh and anyone that disses Dangun Feveron's music is just plain crazy.

Outzone has amazing music...I know its not a shmup but its still got amazing music.

That's the problem I have with Espgaluda. It's always HUGE BATTLESHIP ERINIESU. Probably the catchiest song because of the piano punchi punchi trance. I have a hard time remembering the other songs...

R-Type Delta: Stage 7+Final Boss themes. The other songs are also quite solid, like Stage 1, which starts with catchy keyboard lines, goes surreal in the middle and finally goes rockish towards the end with the arrival of the boss or Stage 4 with the odd voices at the beginning.

Radiant Silvergun: synth orchestra at its finest. The bells in "Return" are great and The Stone-Like theme is as epic as it gets, although I reckon the soundtrack might be a bit on the repetitive side.

Ikaruga: not much to say here. Butsuttekkai, Ideal, etc. Might suffer the same problem as RS but it's nice.

The Touhou series: Another point for History of the Moon (and Imperishable Night in general) and the recent Subterranean Animism Stage 5 theme. Stages 3, 4 and 5 from PCB... I'm biased here since I appreciate the jazz fusion/prog-rock piano driven style from ZUN. The old chiptunes from PC-98 are also excellent.

Psyvariar 2: People mention Cave's trance tunes and forget to mention Psyvariar's Weakboson (which even has a nice bass thrown in the mix), the first boss theme, Earth, Gluon or the last stage theme? Plus the soundtrack comes with an 8 mins (I think, can't remember) piano solo piece.

Samidare: although a couple of songs are remixes of other games this one is amazing.

HellSinker: this crazy game is a mish-mash of everything, including a solo piano piece, orchestral tunes coupled with heaps of blasting techno beats songs, chiptunes and keyboard-driven melodies with some creative touches like Segment 5, which is composed of two songs (Sol / Luna sections) that work separately but also form a third, richer song if you play them together at the same time.

Ether Vapor: many complain it's quite generic or that it suffers the same issue as RS (tunes that use the same melody with subtle modifications) but Stage 1, Apitex theme, the final battle and, of course, Daniel's theme, called DanielON, which I guess is a pun towards Virtual ON given the dude comes with a huge Gundam-mecha with full arsenal.

Thunderforce V: LEGENDARY WINGS. And the rest is also good.

Darius Gaiden: since I heard Visionnerz I love the music from this one.

Ray Series: same deal. I just like the music here.

I would pick Diadra Empty as well but since the author collected freebies from several sources it's not the same. Although the selection is great.

Honourable mentions: Exception, Dangun Feveron, DonPachi, DoDonPachi (and DOJ), Blazing Star, Hyper Duel and... well can't remember more. Out of ideas.

edit: Forgot to mention Jets 'N' Guns Gold. The music rocks!

I don't know, if I had to narrow it down to three, it'd probably be Ibara, Raiden, and Twin Cobra. The first stage song for R-Type Leo is pretty sweet too. There's this part in it where the music stops and there aren't any enemies on the screen, so I stop tapping the fire button, but then the funky beat comes back and I start firing in time with the music again, and it always makes me laugh a little and makes me way happier than that sort of thing should make a 24 year old man

same quality as Thunderforce V).

Mushisashima, Level four-music: relaxing music while you shoot insects -

Many Shmups for the PC-Engine-CD got great music ( at least in
my opinion):

Gates of Thunder

Lords of Thunder

Choaniki I + II : I think similar to the games - you love or hate
the music in the Choaniki-games.

Star Parodier.

A game - series with great music : Parodius.

Stab and Stomp (boss theme) and the Sky level tune from Garegga never fail to pump me up. The sewer and airport stages in Batrider are brilliant, too. The boss music in Batrider gets pretty annoying after a while, though, especially in Boss Rush, so I´m glad I turn the music channels down in MAME and put on some other music while still being able to hear the sound effects.

Other favourites are "Blade Action" and "Snow Fox" from Border Down and "Walking The Land Of Flame" from Mushihimesama (level 3). I´m kind of a Namiki fan, though his music can be pretty annoying at times, but overall I like the complex mood his music is creating.
