Another epiphany occurred. I killed more, I died significantly less (thank god for tapping), and I maxed out my disco men much quicker. Now I just need to bomb less and reveal more poles without needing to bomb. I almost 1LC'd this run, but my yearn for bombing ruined me so.

Target is still 1,350,000 points. To make a significant voice, 1,500,000 points or higher.

Eh, don't aim for that. Trying to play for survival will cripple your score in several ways at once.

Play aggressively, that's the only sensible way of dealing with caravans.

Is there a version of MAME that has working savestates for this game? Restarts take forever :?

Either hold Insert to bypass the intro screen faster, or use FinalBurn Alpha instead of MAME (you'll lose autofire that way, though).
