What about Zaxxon? I loved that game back in the day.

As far as underrated shmups go, Boogie Wings/the Great Ragtime Show's not too shabby.

Is Gemini Wing supposed to default to easy or is that a mame quirk?

Perhaps Tecmo used the same strategy as with Rygar. In the Rygar manual there's a written recommendation to keep the machine at 'easy' for the first month to get players hooked on the excellent gameplay, then put it into 'normal'.

There isn't any Gemini Wing manual available online so we can't be sure though.
