Overlooked/missed MAME shmups.

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

It seems that there are still some MAME shmups that get little to no attention. What are your favorite missed/overlooked shmups for MAME?
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Secondned, though I'll also add the Vasaras to the mix, as I usually do with topics like these. Dang I wish they'd gotten ported someplace, but that'll never happen, heh heh.

True, I would have not known about this game without Taito Legends II for PC. It's hard to look for new shmups to play on MAME when they use all of that silly Japanese.

It's a shooting game where you can't shoot and the bullets are trees and racers.

Seriously though it's Toaplans best shooting game try it and you'll notice some things.

Any non-scrolling shmups really. Imago is my current favourite.

The speed in G-Stream has been fixed, so it's pretty much playable right now. Graphics seem properly emulated, though the sound is not.
Game has a "flexible" powerup system and is generally rather good looking.
Guess I already mentioned in another thread but Cyvern's emulation is pretty good now and it's one of those overlooked gems imo.

I'm very impressed by Chimera Beast.
Also interesting are strange old games like The Alphax Z/Mission 660 or Phantom II.

O_o Really?
I thought it was a derivative and bland POS when I added it. It is only in MAME because it was on the same hw as Magical Cat Adventure. :-) That hw is an early revision of what became the Cave hw.

Nice example. Chimera Beast is indeed a very interesting one taking the "biohorror" theme of games like R-Type or X-Multiply to the extreme.
There's a nice fansite about the game (including some story spoilers on page 2):

You forgot to add Konami's "Time Pilot '84" sequel...with the famous "Further into the Unknown World" tagline. It does feature mad shmupping as well with endowing the player(s) with both bullets and missiles capabilities to master it with. Konami Co. Ltd. did officially release it in the USA for the American arcades. I've played the actual rare arcade cabinet of it a few times back in the mid-1980's and even had the official USA marquee that was backlit. Awesome game for it's time during the Golden Age of arcade shmups era. ^_~

Visco's rare 1996 Storm Blade PCB that runs on the SSV mobo setup that came in both original JPN and USA regions is another arcade PCB title that never got a proper console port. The original JPN region of Storm Blade does feature cool Japanese voice-overs that aren't present in the latter released USA region version PCB. Well worth the asking $150.00+ USD price that it commands on the secondary PCB market. ^_~

PC Engine Fan X!: Is that the current price for the Japanese Storm Blade or both? *holding onto my SB PCB*

Storm Blade is unfortunately not very well emulated in MAME (yet).

Also, I've never put much time into Time Pilot '84, but everytime it comes up for discussion most people say it's not as fun as the first. For me, Time Pilot is one of those rare "must just have another go at it" games. Also, very frantic action, fun and possible to score "high" is unusual for the age.

And I agree on Cyvern. The prerendered graphics are a bit so-so, but otherwise a fine game with interesting scoring. Very Raizing-like.

Yeah, that price would apply to both country regions as not very many Storm Blade PCBs were produced by Visco themselves.

I've tried the USA region of Storm Blade on Mame32 and it plays like a charm. It is just a tad bit different than the orignal JPN region in terms of not having voice-overs. Other than that particular omission, both regions are, techincally, the same content and gameplay-wise. ^_~

Yes, I'd have to agree with you on the stellar gameplay of Konami's 1982 arcade PCB of Time Pilot. I recall playing on a few USA region Centuri released Time Pilot arcade cabinets that had the cool auto-fire hack back in the mid-1980's. Sure saved "wear & tear" on the ol' fingers when playing a serious shmup session of it. ^_~

Really? I remember creditfeeding it for fun (MAME 0.122) and a lot of the backgrounds on the left side of the screen was corrupt. But if you say it runs fine now I believe you. It's a very dark game, visually.

Hopefully I overlooked this, but nobody mentioned Air Gallet?

Air Gallet is the ultimate underrated shooter.
