Not to one up you, but for some dumb reason I have a Duo-R & a Duo-RX both modded. Different mod jobs. Can't decide which one I like better. The cable to the Duo-R is all cocked up though so it's kind of useless at the moment.

is the picture different between the 2 units?

I liked the job this guy did b/c he replaced the av port with another plug that just added a few more pins. So basically no holes in the case were made and I can still use the original composite cables also if I want to.

The only way you can tell is there are a few extra pin holes in the socket.

From what little testing I did, I would say yes. Depends on the game, but both have very, very subtle (but different) artifacts. I only tried them out for a short time though.

Not to one up you either, but I have an RGB modded PC Engine, Super Grafx and Duo RX. :P
And yes, playing PC Engine in RGB is awesome. I hate composite.

The kind of amp used in the mod makes a huge difference. See here for a comparison.

So how does this work? Do certain TVs have special inputs called RGB? Please forgive me, I am a noob.

Some Japanese and European CRT-based monitor have SCART input for RGB input. The Japanese ones have just RGB in via a 21-pin interface.

Those small but sweet 14" Commodore produced Amiga monitors such as the original 1080, 1084 and the 1084S have a simple DB-9 or similar interface for getting that beatiful RGB signal in. Such low resolution graphics 320 x 240 when playing such arcade PCBs looks great on the Amiga monitors, especially if the RGB signal is adjusted for proper picture and color purity.

Such a shame that American A/V equipment manufacturers don't include such superior RGB inputs on such monitors, it only costs a few bucks more. Of course, by using such professional A/V monitor equipement, you'll find such analog RGB inputs quite easily but with such general everyday casual A/V monitors, that isn't the case.

PC-Engine for the lose, eh? Why bother w/ the Super Grafx? You really need to play those 4 games at all?

Well, my white PCE is a bit unreliable, and when I saw that RGB modded Super Grafx complete & boxed with two games (Grand Sword and Battle Ace) on evilbay a few years ago, I put in a lowball bid for someting like 90 EUR, not really expecting to win it. But I did. Maybe there was some sort of sports event on tv at the same time ;)
So I've been using it to play all my Hu-cards ever since (I had my RX modded only very recently).

Aldynes and 1941 are very enjoyable shmups, and Grand Sword isn't a bad platformer. Battle Ace (After Burner-like) is a bit rubbish, and since Ghost 'n Ghouls is arcade perfect on Capcom Generation 2 for PS1/Sat, I never bothered to buy it for SG. Darius Plus plays better on SG (less flickering).

Is it worth it? For the price I paid, definitely. But if you bought one only to play the four SG games, you might end up feeling disappointed.

I have grand sword and gouls n ghosts on super grafx, but no system to play them on. Both were in good shape and a friend sold em' to me cheap. I have a feeling I'll never wind up with the system to play them on. To bad...

I used to have my Gamecube connected to a 1084S, until it stopped working. I never knew anything about the difference between composite and RGB though, it was just that I saw the colors on the end of the RCA connectors matched the colors on the back of the monitor...

Composite Video input and RGB input: a really big difference indeed. I'm surprised that you didn't take advantage of that built-in RGB input on your 1080S monitor. It really makes your gaming truly stand out and you'd never want to go back to using such crappy composite video or the next step up, S-Video (which is better than comp. video anyways).

Here's the breakdown of inputs from lowest to the best possible signal input on such a CRT-based monitor setup: RF switchbox --> Composite Video --> S-Video --> Component Video --> analog RGB.

Is there some sort of device that can convert a VGA signal (from a computer) to RGB? Someone is selling a PVM-2530 that "works great" near me for $50, and I'm thinking about getting it....

For captpain,

You'd be better off getting such custom-made RGB cables and taking advantage of the Sony's PVM-2530 monitor's low-res 15.7 kHz RGB with the 8-pin "VTR" input (located on the backside, of course) -- needs a special Sony produced 8-pin RGB harness though which is HTF these days (than if you were to go with such a fangled VGA to RGB adapter setup). ^_~

I do have such pinouts of that particular Sony VTR RGB input if you want it -- works great for that razor-sharp RGB signal that everyone raves about. ^_~
