This game is no different at all in that respect. We have some old stuff and some new stuff.
This one recycles easily the most though and it's only 5 stages. And there wasn't any new music.

Guys! It's an ALL-NEW (mostly) Gradius game! On the Wii of all consoles! How are you not excited?!

Judging by what I've read so far...Gradius is already dead. [/kenshiro]

Maybe Gradius V has something to do with it...
It's like watching your favourite blockbuster movie getting a solid but in the end underwhelming straight to video sequel.
Quick and cheap fan service, that's what Rebirth looks like.

Where? Aside from the near-carbon copy of Stage 1 from the original Gradius and how Stage 4's end-stage scene (with the skulls) is similar to the one in Gradius I PCE's exclusive stage, every stage in Rebirth is original with only themes being familiar. Only two bosses (the standard Core and the helpless final boss, series traditions) are recycled, the rest are new. Unlike in basically every other Gradius game. How many times have we seen the tentacle-spinning-boss from Salamander which is missing from Rebirth?

As for the music...eh, I don't care. I can only recognize maybe three or four Gradius songs anyway (I've never found them particulary memorable) so that doesn't bother me one bit.

The length and lack of stages is a different matter, but after Gradius V's 60 minutes per loop a serious change of pace might be refreshing. We still haven't seen any footage of the later loops, but at ~20 minutes/loop it's much more tolerable. And I'm hoping it's possible to start the game at a specific loop as well.

Also, here is the entire game -clip Bloodreign was talking about.

I agree, I'd much rather have a condensed Gradius game than the boring sprawling 'epics'.

So... Anyone have a US release date yet?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Just noticed how in the above video Stage 1 looks exactly like the one in the original Gradius, but in this one it turns to ice and the volcanoes at the end spit out enemies instead of rocks.

Also in this one there are active volcanoes in Stage 1...probably played on a different difficulty.

Alright fixed Ghegs, not sure if this link will still work as I no longer see the run on Nico, but I managed to save the run on my PC.

Edit: it still works. :D

Once again, you're welcome (I had the link to this video somewhere else to show it off, slipped in the wrong url here).

Edit part deux: Ghegs retrieved the link for me for the replay for me.

Click on the comments bubble button. When it's X'd, comments are turned off.

Can one do worse than Gradius Rebirth...

...like, choose Gradius Galaxies instead?

I am no Gradius fanatic of sorts, but after playing the game for a while (japanese), I am gonna say I like it. I don't have any weight in an argument against rehashing ideas and so forth - never followed Gradius much - but it is a good shooter, imo.

I suppose 10 dollars is a rip off for someone who knows the series well and this game borrows from all of the previous installments, but I think that is the intention? I mean, when was the last time we played a Gradius game and said "Wow, that is so radical"? I don't think we have, and if we did, we would cry as it wasn't a "true" Gradius game or something. We are shmup fans so we want the same thing over and over with variations on the same themes and ideas. Granted, this isn't what we are looking for, but it is something.

This is all from a TFIV fan, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Not really, mate, but it has been ESRB rated, so it should definitely be on the way. :)

I'd be long dead from sodium poisoning before I took that with enough grains of salt. ;)

Having finally watched most of the videos and caught up on the thread, after my interest waning I'm sold again. There's plenty of new stuff from level two onwards, and I never owned an MSX and still don't, so as a fan of the Gradius audio I'm excited to be able to play the game to some new-to-me music.

I'll be buying this later today, sounds to me like it's worth $10 for a new Gradius game.
