HRAP 1 vs. HRAP 2

Post by professor ganson »

Is there any significant difference apart from button layout? I hear these are just so so for shmups. Are they equally poor in this regard?

To say a HRAP is poor for shmups is like going to an arcade and not to play the newest Cave shoot'em up because the cab has worn buttons.

The sticks are great. They have Sanwa sticks and Hori buttons. Spill out a few $$ extra for Sanwa buttons and you have the same hardware like on most candy cabs. If you want "better" for shmups get a Seimitsu stick.

From the "feeling" HRAP1 and 2 are the same.

Either one they're great for shmups. I mean come on, the majority of shmups only use about 3 buttons and you have a total of 8 to choose from.

Cool, I guess there's no real advantage to getting HRAP 2, then. I've heard over and over that people prefer the Seimitsu stick for shmups, but I'm not sure I've tried either Sanwa or Seimitsu yet. All I have is a Sigma 9000tb.

put a seimitsu stick in my HRAP 3. It's much better than the sanwa was for me.

You've certainly tried Seimitsu as the Sigma 9000TB has a Seimitsu LS-32 joystick and Seimitsu buttons. The LS-32 is widely (though not unanimously) regarded as the best for shmups, but none of the HRAPs (except one or two very expensive LE versions) come with the LS-32.

The original HRAP1 (mirror style, scratches everywhere) is a good choice. Probably the best choice in the HRAP department. You could probably get one of those off Yahoo Japan and stick a LS-32 in it (something like this). With the HRAP1 re-release, the buttons are of lesser quality and sticking a LS-32 in is no longer possible, so you would need the original HRAP1.

The HRAP SA comes with a LS-32-01 stick. If you want one, your only option would be Yahoo Japan. I'm not sure if this is different from the regular LS-32. Some people prefer Sanwa over Seimitsu and vise versa. It's entirely up to you. Since you have a 9000TB (excellent stick), maybe you should look at tracking down the PS2 adapter which was made for it a few years back.

The HRAP SA does NOT come with an LS-32-01. The SA stands for SAnwa so it has all Sanwa parts. JLF joystick and OBSN-30 buttons. It is a great stick all around, but like I said it's Sanwa. I think it's great for Shmups but it really comes down to personal prefrence. That said the HRAP SA is about the best commercially available PS2 stick there is and it is not just available from Tahoo Japan but from many American sites as well, and if you really need an LS-32 you can easily put one in.

Playing with such Seimitsu arcade parts when shmupping is the way to go. Unless you like the tactical feel of Sanwa arcade parts, it's just a matter of personal preference. Either way, is better than using such stock Hori parts from the get-go. ^_~

He probably means HRAP SE, this one comes with a LS-32-01 and GX buttons (equivalent of Sanwa's RGs).

Anyway, I've sent a Virtua Stick High Grade (full Sanwa) to Todd so he will know the difference between Sanwa and Seimitsu very soon

Yeah I know what it "stands for" It says it right on my joystick, but it's a play on words. That's why the HRAP SE or Special Edition has all SEimitsu parts.

I never knew that. That makes Special Addition a lot less funny. ;[

whats the big difference between sanwa and siemitsu?

I just made a joystick with sanwa b/c everyone told me it was best for fighters. I went that way b/c honestly I am way more picky with fighters than for shooters in a stick.

I've never actually seen the HRAP SE before. The HRAP SA is all over Yahoo Japan, but I've never seen one of the SE's for sale over there.

Anyway, since the OP has a 9000tb, why can't you just take the stick out of that and place it in a HRAP1? Is it soldered or troublesome to get to? (Edit: Nevermind, just opened mine, don't bother. The buttons are also soldered to the PCB as well). You might want to just order what you want off akihabarashop and follow the HRAP2 tutorial at shoryuken. HRAP1's are the same as HRAP2's, so the tutorial still applies.

I guess you're probably aware, but it's maybe worth mentioning, in addition to the HRAP1 having a shiny surface that shows smudges easier, the HRAP1 is black while the HRAP2 is white. :/
