Any difference between 360's and PS3's HDMI?

Post by gundamalpha »

I'm having trouble hooking up my PS3 to my rather old HDTV through HDMI > DVI cable, but it works fine with the 360 without any problem. Could it be PS3 using HDMI 1.3 while 360 uses 1.0? Or could be something relating to HDCP? Wish someone could point out the difference between the 2 console's HDMI output, if there's any. Thanks.

The PS3 protects the video with HDCP even when you are playing a game. If your display is not HDCP compliant it will not work.

The 360 does not output HDCP during gameplay.

So that's the reason. Thanks for your precious info. I'll just get the very expensive VGA cable for the PS3 from play-asia since my TV display component horribly. Or is there any other better alternative?

Or you could use an XRGB-2 with Japanese SCART cable and plug it into your existing HDTV's VGA adapter setup. Or if your HDTV monitor does have an DVI input, just use an VGA to DVI adapter and you're good to go. Turn on XRGB-2's fake "scan-lines" functionality for completeness. ^_~

as if I didn't try ;) Doesn't work this way since the scanline function only works with 240p material. The 360 on the other hand can only deliver 480i on games like Raiden Fighters.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I've sold my XRGB 2 a while ago, plus I can only get 480p from that set up. I could get 720p with the VGA cable at least.

I've heard good things about a VGA converter around this forum which is cheap like $50 but performance wise is very good. Wonder where/should/can I get one of those
