Wells Gardner chassis problems

Post by dpful »

I've got a star wars racer cab with a 33" VGA monitor, the flyback transformer (that what it is? with the red wire leading to the tube) started smoking and lit on fire. The chassis is #025a1486-001 and the transformer says wgm2730.

The cab rules, it plays shmups now, but I've had the hardest time finding replacement parts. I don't know shit about monitors, and the goog is getting me nowhere.
Does anyone have advice on how to proceed or good places to look?
I don't know what's compatible with what and it just seems like days of research are involved--help!

I came across this place
http://www.jomac.net.au/parts.htm
Anyone have a comment on them?

Might want to try asking on klov.com forums, but 33" monitors (especially VGA) are pretty rare. Probably easier to replace the entire chassis with the same model if you can find it.

I've bought stuff from Jomac before. Those guys are great, and really know their stuff. Highly recommended.

If nothing else, you're totally in luck that it's a WG. It varies between models of course but in terms of overall average, they are like #1 in reliability and more importantly fixability.

I wrote Jomac and they said they didn't have anything even close to what I need(?), and I tried wells gardner and they said the best I could do was buy a whole new monitor from them. Anyways, makes me feel like I was unfortunate enough to buy the most rare monitor in the world.

I also came across this bit
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64564.0
It talks about how wells gardner stuff is bad.
I had always thought that it was the best stuff, too.
Does anyone know what would cause the flyback transformer to light on fire? I'd consider just buying a new one of those, but I'm worried there's other probs (I probably couldn't fix or trouble shoot other stuff.)

I happened when I accidentally turned the power strip it's plugged into off and on real fast-- it broke the monitor, and the computer I had in the cab.

why don't you just get another flyback transformer
switching it on/off fast will not cause a flyback to melt down

flybacks can crack and arc to ground, which is what yours has done

you could probably get a generic chassis to fit the tube but you need to have an inductance meter to read the horizontal and vertical yoke

It did stop working right at that instant- same with the computer inside. Could the arcing flyback blitz the computer?
Could anything else get blitzed when it failed? I'd definitely look into buying a new flyback if it was a safe bet that that's all that was wrong (just because I have no idea how to fix monitors).

I made those measurements for Jomac, and it was them that said they had nothing for me. Does anyone know of a place that could supply something like a generic chassis?

rodotron do a 32" or 35" chassis that may match your tube

can a monitor arcing to ground cause a problem elsewhere-33,000 volts arcing over, good chance

Try PNL, they may still have some flybacks.

Most showcase cabs have 33" monitors.

Wow! he said he had extra flybacks, would go over the board and get everything in order! Sounds like everythings easy! Seems like it won't cost too much, too. Man, that's amazing. I'll report back with how it goes.
