Question about emulating on the PSP
I was wondering what emulators run on the PSP(PS, MAME, Genesis, SNES etc.) and what is the accuracy of the emulation? I doubt it'll run MAME 100 percent, but what about the Genesis or SNES?
Also, does it need to be chipped, or is there another way around it?

Do a search for custom firmware installation on Google. There are very detailed guides all over the place, mostly found on forums. Procedure varies depending on if you have a phat or slim and what current official firmware you're running.
As for emulators, most all the ones that work are very accurate and run full speed for the most part. Any console you can think of up through Sega CD runs great. PC-E CD runs some games, but sound is a major issue for most games that do run. Beyond that era of console, don't even bother (sans PSX games of course). Converting PSX games is a breeze too once you know how. Really opens up the game library for the PSP, especially in the shooter department.
MAME isn't even worth bothering with. In it's current state, it runs some stuff before the mid-80s and back, and even then it's pretty pitiful. Most games have suck a low average FPS that they're unplayable. Sad thing is, it's been like that for a while and no one really seems interested in working on it any further. However, there are excellent emus for CPS1, CPS2, and Neo Geo that run everything full speed. There is also a port of Final Burn Alpha that is in the early stages of development that is running some games of interest (Esprade, (Do)DonPachi, etc. with promise for running Guwange). Hopefully we'll see some development on that sometime.

Hmm...I know the new PSPs can hook up to your television.
If i'm able to emulate Genesis and SNES and whatnot, can I play them on the TV with my PSP, and it look about 100 percent?

How big would the borders be?SFKhoa wrote:Unless your TV has a zoom feature, expect borders from all sides of the screen.
Also, your TV needs to support 480p to be able for the PSP to play games on it.

Don't the newer 3000 models coming out support SD televisions? I thought I read that somewhere.
As for playing on your TV, I'm no help there. Never tried it. That's what the modded Xbox is for at my house. If you want to play on a TV a lot, I'd suggest getting one of those. They've dropped in price significantly and run a lot more stuff than a PSP would, including MAME. The PSP is just great for its portability.

I was thinking about that, but I hear that it won't run all the games I want in MAME at it's proper speed, or without glitches.subcons wrote:Don't the newer 3000 models coming out support SD televisions? I thought I read that somewhere.

Does it run Genesis, PC Engine, and SNES at 100%?
And why the hell hasn't someone finally chipped the 360 or PS3 and put emulators on THEM yet? Seems like they would handle it all.

MAME isn't fully up-to-date on the Xbox, this is true. But it runs a lot of games perfectly fine. Newer games are somewhat spotty obviously because the build is older. If you have 4 controllers, 4 player arcade games are a blast to play with some friends. There's also a port of FBA which is a better emu for running the CPS/Neo stuff (although, MAME runs those as well).evil_ash_xero wrote:I was thinking about that, but I hear that it won't run all the games I want in MAME at it's proper speed, or without glitches.

All the console stuff is covered on the Xbox, and it won't be windowed. Plus, you're not limited by a memory stick like with the PSP. You can just load entire libraries across all past consoles and arcade hardware with a larger HDD. Add in the fact that Media Center is great for watching video content and it's really a great thing to own. I have Netflix, but I download a lot of TV shows and movies from bittorrent and just stream them through my network to my Xbox/TV. I really have no need for cable television any more and I'm no longer subjected to commercials either. Once this service with Netflix and Xbox Live gets up and running, I'll be in hog heaven.
PSP has a pretty decent library of actual games in it's own right and emulates quite a lot for a portable system that was never meant to do so, but If you're looking for something to emulate games in your home, go with a modded Xbox. I spent over $200 for mine 2+ years ago and it was well worth it. They're like half that price now.
EDIT: I meant to address the last question you asked. It's my understanding, in short, that the 360 isn't as open ended as the original Xbox is/was. The Xbox is basically just a Windows PC crammed into a small box. When they build the 360, they didn't want the same thing happening again. You can mod a 360, but the HDD is proprietary, it's not just some regular HDD you'd yank out of a computer. So all you can really do by modding a 360 is play burns.

Well, i'm confused.
I downloaded PopStation to play PS1 games on my PSP, and when I try to open it up, it tells me that I don't have the necessary files, even though I have the BASE and KEY files in my Data folder.
Ideas?
Also, am I supposed to do this all on my comp and then upload it to my PSP or what? I downloaded the program on my PSP, but can't find it.
I'm totally confused on this one. Only had it a day. Help me out!
