Sorta new to shmups, even though I have been playing them...

Post by EvilSpants »

I am somewhat new to the shmups genre in terms of games to get. I have been playing since I was young and playing the Apple II/c version of Defender. Every now and again, I would pick up a game of Raiden or Darius on the SNES or PS1, etc for the other systems as well.

However now I am rather serious about starting a collection of classic shumps now that I have acquired a Turbo Grafx16 and a Neo Geo CDZ. So my question is, what games for both of those systems would you guys recommend? I have a few in mind that I would love to get, such as Viewpoint for the Neo Geo CD, and Air Zonk for the Turbo Grafx. Anybody else have any ideas?

That is a good starting list, thank you! I will keep those in mind when I go looking for them.

Neo doesn't have that many, but almost all of the ones available are pretty good. PC-Engine has a lot. Be sure to check the Xenocide Files for a list of what's available for both systems (not positive if they're totally complete, but it's a good starting point).

Both of those consoles can get a bit pricey when you start buying shooters for them, so I'd suggest checking out possible candidates via emulation first to see if you like them. Just a thought.

That is something that I have long thought about, and I have seen the prices of both of the consoles for those games and yes, they do get a bit pricey. I am not detracted from that. I will probably at least start with 3 of those games mentioned in the list above.
