Star Ocean- SNES, PS2, and PSP: Questions!

I've found myself a bit intrigued by Star Ocean lately, by playing it on my emulator. I have a few questions.

Are there any emulators that run Star Ocean properly yet? I find that zsnes just doesn't cut it.

How are the PS2 ones? One specifc question: I basically hate the overabundance of story and cut scenes in RPGs nowadays. Does it go overboard, or does it stay a bit more old school. Also, can you turn the battle voices off?(i'm easily annoyed)

Anyone played the Japanese PSP remake of the first one? Also, can you turn the battle voices off in it(see above).

All I can answer is that I've repeatedly heard that snes9x runs Star Ocean better than zsnes. I'm not up on any recent SNES emu developments, though.

I played through most of Syar Ocean on Snes9x a couple of years back and I had no problems. I remember hearing that it got a bit garbled towards the end, but they may have sorted it out. Tales of Phantasia is better anyway, but that's just my opinion. Ah, memories...

I can't really say if SO3 has an overabundance in story compared to other modern RPGs. It's definitely on par with most.

That, and I found the story to be horrid, especially at and after a specific point in the game.

SO1=Decent. Ahead of it's time but hardly the most fun rpg on the nes.

SO2=Haven't personally played it but I've heard that the faulty translation and bugs almost ruin one of the best science fiction rpg you can find on the ps1. Almost.

SO3=Why is the boring story, dull game world and nonsensical item creation system ruining the fun combat? Oh, must be because it sucks...
Worst ending in anything ever btw.

I'm looking forward to SO4, with it's apparent lack of dumb twists like that of SO3 and the whole idea of it being an origins story.

Also looking forward to its soundtrack. Motoi Sakuraba always delivers with his SO OSTs, IMO.

Sakuraba delivers on everything ever pretty much.

SO3 was excellent if you could skip the cutscenes, which you could. IC was a bit of a pain in the ass for sure, but it was also much more flexable (and exploitable!). Battle trophies made the game, though. SO4 for the 360 better have like 500 achievements worth 2 points apeice.

SO2 is also one of my favorite games of all time and it's probably harder than SO3 at its highest point. I never bothered going to the lengths to fight Indy Unlimited or Iseria Queen on Universe, but I assume they rape hard enough to make the bloody armor trick not work.

SO3 is a very nice game, apart from the (seriously) boring story.
Luckily skippable.
To be true i only started to like it after having looped it once.
But now i love it.

So how frequent are the cutscenes? Would I be pushing "start" every couple of minutes, or is it just that the cutscenes are spread out, but are just superlong?

They're not terribly frequent or long for the most part, but the story jumps the shark and is pretty mediocre overall.

That said, it's worth going through the first time. Cutscene skips are a GODSEND in the three or so subsequent playthroughs you'll be doing if you get addicted to battle trophies, though.
