I downloaded the demo and gave it a try... I did not think it was very good. It has pretty cheap flash style graphics, and basic beat-em-up gameplay. And they're trying to charge $15 for it? I don't get it.
On top of that, the demo was INCREDIBLY easy. I couldn't find any difficulty setting, and I don't know if it gets harder or what, but that was way too easy.
If you want a good beat-em-up, there are so many better games. Try Guardian Heroes, for one. Castle Crashers is a glorified flash game that, aside from the four player option, doesn't really have any redeeming values.

This is not similation. Get ready to destoroy the enemy. Target for the weak points of f**kin' machine. Do your best you have ever done.
While Castle Crashers certainly doesn't compare to Guardian Heroes (but then again, nothing does), its still a damn good game.
If you only played the first level then uh... well, there's like, 20 levels. It has the same RPG elements as Guardian Heroes, 20 something unlockable characters. an actual overworld to explore, tons of secrets, and I assure you, its gets MUCH more challenging as you progress through the game.
For what it is, its a damn solid game. And as has been stated, its great for co-oping, both online and off.
In so far as you UFO:
Could you quit being a little girl in my threads? I understand you may be trying to act like your avatar or something, but its really not appreciated.

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
My impressions of the demo:
Long level is long.
3x enemy, 3x enemy, 3x enemy - all alike.
Enemies have too many hit points, or you are too weak - either.
Player is nibbled to death by weak enemies in a constant stream.
Music is nice.
Graphics are ok but look like a cheap flash game, particularly in animation.
Stupid annoying BUY ME begs are stupid and annoying.
But here's the key point:
It's not nearly as good as a lot of old classic beatemups. Examples: THe Punisher, Knights Of The Round, Crime Fighters, Violent Storm.
Despite being a clone of those games, and not being as good, it will get critical praise for being new and original, while a port of the far better arcade games would be met with derision.

I dunno. I found the demo to be somewhat fun.
Apparently you can unlock a truckload of new characters to play as well. And the graphics everyone is talking about? All of those are hand drawn. They may look cheap, but it probably took years to draw all of them.
At any rate, I had fun. If I get a spare 15 bucks I'll probably pick it up. I gotta play through N+ first though.

The levels being long is kind of deceptive, the game is actually broken up on the map quite a bit but doesn't return you to the map usually until you beat a boss. A lot of the other balance issues are remedied by playing with 2 or more people. The demo seems to make you a lot weaker so you will grind and play longer.
The glorified flash game comment is dumb. I'll take that for Alien Hominid but not this. This game looks beautiful on an HD set. It was worth the wait, you can tell they took that time to add a lot of polish.

These are my thoughts exactly.subcons wrote:BC:R?jp wrote:Best. downloadable service game. ever!
Anyway, the demo was pretty impressive. I haven't bought it yet though, since I dislike flash games and didn't like the horrible Metal Slug clone which was Alien Hominid. Apparently the online is really average and has really poor netcode. People have been reporting that some games run fine, others are impossible and you'll end up getting kicked out. Any experiences with that, guys?
Air comboing people is really fun, too.
From what I've been reading it seems like matchmaking is fucked. Playing with friends in a private room seems less prone to disconnect. But it could just be that so many people are playing it at once. Give it some time and see if it fixes itself. If they have to release a patch, that could take a while.
Um... I'm pretty sure I'm the only person you'll find putting any praise on Crows what-so-ever. And even then, its not like, "Zomg AWESOME!" type praise, just, "Eh, its pretty cool for what it is."
Guardian Heroes is the greatest ever though... it just needed an option to turn the text off.
Anyways, I beat Castle Crashers today. Damn good experience, and I still contend its the best downloadable game out. Tons of levels, unlockables, and the boss fights are incredibly well done. Bravo!

I just played the demo. I'm impressed. I insta-bought it as soon as it prompted me to at the boss. I wasn't really looking forward to this one, but it really does seem far more polished than Alien Hominid and there's tons of content here. Combine that with the multiplayer and it's a pure winner.
I'm kind of busy as of late, so I don't have as much free time as I'd like to put into this one, but I might be able to get on the evenings here and there. If anyone wants to play, add me. My GT is subcons463.

I'm torn. I was going to buy this, but then I realized it was $15. Come on, it's no Braid. Although I did have someone online today who wanted me to buy it to play with him, I see a lot of people on forums complaining about online and glitches which erase their data/stats/stuff.
Meh, I'm going to pass for now unless my friend tells me it's worth it. I bought Puzzle Quest for 1200 and barely played it.

This is not a "flash-to-console" port. It was never a flash game. If I hear anymore about this being a flash game I think I'll flip. Just because the artist is known for the Newgrounds stuff doesn't make this any less than a full fledged project designed from the ground up for console. Just say you don't like the art style or something, really.

Your right... it's better. There's so much more content and potential play time in Castle Crashers. Look, I loved Braid and I was happy to support a game pretty much made by one guy, but that was a $10 game. CC is well worth $15. I can understand not buying it due to the problems being reported with it though. I just bought with the intention of playing it with friends locally at some point. Hopefully the online with get ironed out though. It might just be due to a lot of people playing the game. They had to temporarily take down the Castle Crashers website as well as their blog because their servers are getting so slammed.Elixir wrote:I'm torn. As for the flash game comments, I have to agree that they aren't really called for in this case. There were multiple reasons I didn't like Alien Hominid, but one of them was the fact that it was basically a glorified flash game. This game has polish. It doesn't feel at all like a flash game. I'm usually not a fan of this style either, but it's so varied and imaginative here. Plus, the music is awesome.

Man, I don't get it. We get a polished, high res 2D side scrolling beat 'em up game and people bitch about the art style and price ($5 more than what you wanted to pay.. $5 !!).
And honestly, the "it's a Flash game, it sucks, durr" comments get thrown out way too much. N, one of the most amazing action games in recent times, was done in Flash. Fact is, Flash has grown into an extremely competent development environment.

Still don't like it though ;D
I've never gone from "insta-buy, get it right away" to "don't buy this game" so quickly..
Don't bother adding me.. I can't play with people who aren't in JP/AU/NZ. I tried getting a game going with a US friend and it just wouldn't work. We ended up getting to the character select screen, and just after that, it died. Another instance, I couldn't press Y and "toggle ready" in the lobby, because one game, it did nothing. Another instance, the game just froze when I entered the lobby. It's going to throw random "your NAT settings are wrong" "game cancelled" "stuff is wrong" messages at you which aren't true. That said, online is broken and impossible to use. The game itself is fun, but half of the fun is in multiplayer. They should have used Bomberman Live's handling of netcode.. because this is a mess.
For 1200 points, it's not worth the price. Go buy Rez. Go buy Puzzle Quest. Go buy.. a song in Idolmaster instead. Just.. ANYTHING apart from this game.. unless they fix the online. A single player experience is only half the game -- so I wouldn't be complaining if this was 800 points.

I played a little just now by myself and beat the catfish thingy. This game is all kinds of awesome. Can't wait to get at least some two player action in. I jumped into a four way arena battle before I logged off but I got stomped because the other three people had leveled up knights and secret characters. Didn't have any lag or problems with it. Hopefully co-op goes as smoothly when I get to try it, but I'm not counting on it from everything I've been reading. Hopefully I'll get the chance to jump on this weekend and play some more.
