Bedroom candy cabinets?

Hey guys,

Well, it's looking like I'm going to be getting my first candy cab pretty soon, and I've been trying to work out the logistics of actually getting it into my bedroom before I make the purchase. I have noticed that some of you have similar setups, and I'm curious to hear how you went about it. Did it fit through your door?

I'll probably be getting a New Astro City. I think the width is approximately 750mm. Is this accurate? It seems my doorway is very close to that, but I'm pretty sure it would be just a little too fat to fit.

My current plan is to take out my windows and take it in through there. (a nightmare, but doable, I suppose)

On a side note, can any New Astro City owners give me fairly accurate weight/dimension measurements?

Weight roughly 250lbs.

I can imagine taking it through the window would be a terrible idea though.

Some people detach the control panel to make them smaller. I'm not sure what that makes the dimensions though.

Open garage door. Place cabinet in garage. Park on street. That's what I had to do anyway...

Yeah, through the window is going to be crazy, but it seems to be the only option save knocking down a wall or cutting out a piece of my door frame. I guess I'll just be sure to have a lot of manpower to ensure it makes it through okay.

I thought about taking off the control panel, but it doesn't seem like cutting out millimeters from the 905mm dimension would make it fit through the door frame any easier. ;[

For the pad, we just loaded them into the garage, and the Egret II we brought through the front door with a ramp. When I brought the Egret home, we brought it down the steps through the back door; in general these cabs fit through doors perfectly fine.

Interesting. Well, I'm definitely going to try to fit it through the door before I go the window route. I pray that it is that easy.

Make sure you have a power plug with earth return in your bedroom.
You don't wanna go through so much effort to let you cab in and end up dead all in the same day

Astro/New Astro can be split up the middle so you end up with it in 2 pieces ( front and back). There's a bunch of screws running round the cab holding the 2 halves together. Those 2 halves will fit through any door.

Take the monitor out first, disconnect the wiring under the control panel, unscrew and split. Pretty straightforward providing you label all the bits you disconnect/unscrew etc.

unless you have really small door ways you should be able to get it through the doorways by simply taking the door off the hinges.....

and if you did take the control panel off it would definitely fit

CP doesn't come off on Astros - it's moulded as part of the front half IIRC.

EDIT: This probably makes it clearer.

CP does too come off on Astros, you have to loosen som screws in the baseplate is all.
then you can lift the whole front out.

Yeah, the flip-up top bit does, but for width-reduction purposes, doesn't the cab need to be split as per the link? (ie. the shelf the actual CP rests on is part of the front moulding).

I'm happy to be corrected on this - I didn't need to dismantle mine to get it through the door...

you would have to remove the monitor to do it but ya, the whole front panel comes off.....but its only like 29.5 in wide left side to right side so that should fit through most door ways with the door off the hinges

both mine fit through my front door with the door off.....barely... no scraping

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm glad to hear that the New Astro City can be broken up down the middle. I'd rather take it apart and put it back together than do the window thing. It's inspiring to hear that some of you guys have fit it through your door frames as-is, though. I really, really hope it's that easy for me. That would make me happy.

Can anyone elaborate on this? I don't know anything about this, and I'm pretty sure none of my power outlets are special in any way. Do cabinets require a special kind of plug? Will a surge protector do the trick? Now I'm scared.

you are fine...dont worry.....i guess some older houses might have non-grounded outlets....most of those would have burned down already tho....lolz

but ya....just hook it up through a surge protector and you will be fine.....you can even plug it straight into the wall if you want....but surge protectors are always a good idea with expensive electronics

what he is saying is make sure your outlet is a three prong outlet. and if you use a surge protector (recommended) that the led that indicates ground is lit up. a lot of people assume that because there is a three prong outlet that it is grounded and in older homes this can be false.

an interesting thing to note is that the new astro city cabs come with a two prong outlet installed and a terminal post that you have to run a seperate ground line too. not at all practical in a normal household, but it's pretty easy to remove the power panel off the back of the cabinet and rewire it with a three prong power cord. also a good time to add an outlet inside the cabinet if you are planning on running a console or a pc in there.

and on the subject of size, my cab fit through my 30" basement door. it was tight and i had to pop the door off the hinges, but it fit. you should be ok.

I got my Astro City up the stairs and into a bedroom. It's a good idea to remove the monitor before doing any moving, as it accounts for most of the weight.

I had to take the door off the hinges and pop off the door jam to get it to slide through. I considered halving the machine, but that is such a pain with all the screws and parts involved.
