Is Altered Beast properly emulated?
Is Altered Beast properly emulated?
I've been in the mood for some Altered Beast nostalgia play recently. However, not a single port has satisfied me. (The SMS port is pretty well done for the machine). I am not asking for a ROM file, just need to know what emulator runs it perfectly, or close enough to be enjoyable. Somehow, my Xbox crashes when I try to play it on MameOX.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Get MAME and put that ROM file you've apparently got on it. If it doesn't work then you need to update the ROM file - I dunno when this was last done and I don't particularly feel like loading up MAME just to check it out. But yeah, any PC made in the last ten years will emulate this just fine.
Genesis even more so if you don't mind the cut-down version.

MAME used to have problems with Altered Beast (the graphics would crap-out in stage 3), but the newer versions seem to have fixed everything. One of the Japanese sets still doesn't work, though.
You can check MAWS to see any and all of the games MAME emulates.

Besides improper sound effect volumes, and messing up the background transition from color to black and white when you face a boss?Daigohji wrote:The Megadrive collection for PS2 contains the arcade version as an unlockable, along with the Megadrive version. The usual DE slip ups. Disappointing, but not a game breaker for me.The Coop wrote:Besides improper sound effect volumes, and messing up the background transition from color to black and white when you face a boss?Daigohji wrote:The Megadrive collection for PS2 contains the arcade version as an unlockable, along with the Megadrive version. have you tried the PC engine version (HU card): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-hDuG_w5b4
I have not tried the CD-rom version but it should be even better

It's really not. It's basically a port of the PC-Engine card, but with a poor opening and more voice. I've read conflicting comments about how the music, but some say it's the same as the card version. I haven't played it myself, but I've yet to come across one "above average" review score.yojo! wrote:have you tried the PC engine version (HU card): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-hDuG_w5b4

The problem with the PCE port is the collision detection. You touch one wolf, and next thing you know, you're bouncing from enemy to enemy, losing your life without anything you can do. Graphic-wise, it blows away even the Genesis version, but it's so unfair it's not even enjoyable.
When I try to play it in MameOX, it says it's missing some roms... but you also said I should get the newest Mame, as well. Which version does run it without problems?

Set 7 runs without any problems in the newer MAMEs. It'll tell you that some of the files are wrong, but it plays fine.Specineff wrote:The problem with the PCE port is the collision detection.
