The first half of descent is decent, but the monster just looked ridiculous. I think that if you can get past that it might a decent flick, but for me it was ruined. I do like that asian chick from Hotel Babylon.
30 days of night was awesome. There's something about the snowwy environment I like alot as well.

Well, they're two completely different types of movies, but I love them equaly, just for different reasons. Alien is atmospheric, while Aliens is more of an action movie, that's a given. I recently saw the uncut version of Aliens for the first time and liked that version far better. Gives you more background story and makes for a more cohesive watch than the cut down version.Nuke wrote:Fix'd. Not even debatable in my mind, Vietnam in space hasn't aged well.
Still, am entertaining movie but hilariously overrated.
I guess if you're a big fan of spelunking. That's all the first half is.D wrote:The first half of descent is decent...

The real reason why James Cameron had to trim down the alloted time for his 1986 theaterical version of Aliens, the movie studio wanted movie audiences to get their money's worth with such a shortened version. Of course, the Laserdisc version of Aliens with the Special Edition extended footage is where it all got started, then eventually it was released on VHS format and later, on DVD format.subcons wrote:Well, they're two completely different types of movies, but I love them equaly, just for different reasons. Carrie Henn, the girl portrayed as Newt in the Aliens film, is now a elementary school teacher and still has still retained that famous high pitched scream. Sadly, she never did another film after the Aliens film was released. For the Alien 3 film, another girl of similar build and stature was used to substitute for the Newt character...of course, she's killed off during suspended sleep hibernation on board the USS Sulaco military spaceship where there was a hidden Alien eggsack stowed away. ^_~

so i rewatched the descent last night....not nearly as bad as i remembered....still not super good tho....and if the UK ending is 'way better' than the US release i would hate to think how bad the US version is, cuz i thought the UK ending was kinda weak
but there were like 3 scenes in it that did make me jump....dont wanna ruin it for anyone so i wont list which scenes tho
3 out of 5....tops

The regular US version just cuts at the scene in the car, basically making no sense. However, there was an unrated ending for the US that sounds fairly similar to the UK version from what I read. I give it kudos for giving a sense of hopelessness, as I like endings that do that, but I really don't get the genius of it. Granted, it's better than the abbreviated ending, but it certainly doesn't make the film.
I gave it the same exact 3 stars.

This particular movie was so horribly, breathtakingly, insipidly stupid that I'm boycotting Smith's current movie "Hancock" on general principle because of it.PROMETHEUS wrote:I am legend

IAL was probably the most anger-inducing movie I've seen in years. Yes: it really is *that* bad. And I really tend to enjoy Will Smith movies for the most part!
though it may not be a "real" horror movie, the Hitcher (the original with Rutger Hauer) is fucking great.
I've seen some people mention High Tension and I gotta say that the twist at the end really hurt the movie for me. I thought it was nonsensical and struck me as a cheap way to surprise the audience.

This I have to reply to, this is actually whats wrong with 'horror' movies nowadays, there's no build-up to anything, no character developement, tension or atmosphere, they just give the monsters or what have you all away as soon as they can because audiences today have no patience whatsoever. Descent is an awesome movie. And Aliens is still the best ever. Actually now that I think about it, they should let Marshall direct Alien 5 or somethingjonny5 wrote:hearing you guys discuss the move is reminding me what bothered me about the descent......it took waaaaaaaaay to long to get going.....i hate that, especially in horror flicks....

Alien V film?
And has the Alien V film been officially annouced or what? It would be great to see the Ripley character back again on the big screen doing what she knows best, fighting off those pesky Aliens. Director Ridley Scott and actress, Mrs. Weaver, would know how to do such a proper Alien films sequel as it was meant to be. ^_~moonblood wrote:This I have to reply to, this is actually whats wrong with 'horror' movies nowadays, there's no build-up to anything, no character developement, tension or atmosphere, they just give the monsters or what have you all away as soon as they can because audiences today have no patience whatsoever. There was one script floating around where it was supposed to continue the further adventures of Ripley, Newt, Hicks and Bishop in the third Alien movie sequel from the unexpected turn of events that took place in the second Aliens film. But we got instead was the shitty mess that is the current Alien3 flick. Why kill off all that great character development that the 2nd one introduced? What the fuck happened there? Granted, there were numerous script drafts written and rewritten for the 3rd Alien film, that is a given.
As usual, Weyland-Yutani Corporation (a mega-powerhouse of joint American and Japanese conglomerate with a hand in everything from space exploration, mining on distant off-worlds, etc., still rules with an iron-fist on Earth), the so-called "Company" still, relentlessly and tirelessly, presses on to acquire such Aliens for their biological weapons division. The "Company" still has the unlimited manpower, logistics, financial expenditures, and resources to do so for a very long time, indeed.
At the end of Alien Resurrection, we learn that the Ripley character finally makes it back on Earth after been gone so long, the years have passed like that of sand grains in an hourglass. If a good script can be written up, Alien V can regain it's former glory of it's first two films in the series...that, I'd like to see done properly and fittlingly for the Alien film sequel franchise.
20th Century Fox needs to get their collective heads out of their assess and do a proper Alien V sequel for the hard-core sci-fi/horror fans. ^_~

and pretty much once it really got going the film was over
Abso-freaking-lutely. And I would consider this movie a horror flick...it does the tension/terror thing extremely well, with a big old dose of just plain squeamish discomfort and gore. I saw this when I was much younger, and it was a difficult watch for me then, but when it was done, I loved it.Acid King wrote:though it may not be a "real" horror movie, the Hitcher (the original with Rutger Hauer) is fucking great.
Plus: bonus points for using slowdown quite effectively without being overly ham-handed about it. Too many movies use it to try and *manufacture* drama instead of trying to enhance what's already there. One works, and the other doesn't.
Double Plus: Rutger Hauer is perfect for the role. He's creepy all by his lonesome.
I don't mind a build up if there are interesting characters to develop or there is something worth building up to. But you need to keep things interesting at the same time. Very difficult to do, which is why the list of movies like this that are actually good is so small. All the women in The Descent are just uninteresting characters to even bother trying to develop, or maybe the script and the way they're developed is bad, take your pick. All your left with is spelunking and the obligatory one character falling and being wounded who then needs help. As if we didn't see that one coming within the first ten minutes of the film.moonblood wrote:This I have to reply to, this is actually whats wrong with 'horror' movies nowadays, there's no build-up to anything, no character developement, tension or atmosphere, they just give the monsters or what have you all away as soon as they can because audiences today have no patience whatsoever. The other sub-genres of horror just aim to do different things. It's fine if it's not your cup of tea, but you also shouldn't go in watching a slasher or zombie movie, etc., expecting anything more from it.

Alright yeah I see your point, I guess I just dont find Descent that slow or uninteresting. And I do 'get' other sub genres, recently I enjoyed the hell out of Machine Girlsubcons wrote:I don't mind a build up if there are interesting characters to develop or there is something worth building up to. I've been meaning to see that for years. It's in oblivion on Netflix and has been in my queue forever. I'd imagine people just stole all the copies they had over time. Thanks for reminding me of it, I'll just go ahead download it seeing as how there's no way in hell I'd pay $90 for it.jormungand wrote:I just watched Begotten last night. Pretty f'ed up. I recall heading down to my local Blockbuster once, and had the VHS tape version of the 1971 horror classic "Let's Scare Jessica to Death". It was priced at an insane $70.00 USD! I thought I ain't paying that fucking kind of $$$ for a subpar & used VHS tape of that particular horror, however hard it may be to find these days.
I went down to my local Best Buy and saw that it was finally released on DVD with a lower price point. ^_~

Let me know your thoughts of it if you do get to see it. I just watched it again with a group of people, and maybe if you watch it you can answer a question that is plaguing me about this film.subcons wrote:I've been meaning to see that for years. Re: Recommend a horror film
sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but rather that, than posting a new topic
Ive watched a LOT of horror movies through the years. And it has gotten to the point where I dont really get scared anymore and older 70s and 80s horror movies are more funny than scary. That was untill last year, when I watched Paranormal Activity. It was tense and kept me on the edge of my seat. loved the atmosphere and it genuinly scared me.
so,... I recommended it to my girlfriend and she watched it last night with her friend. Called me afterwards and told me it was not scary at all and actually quite boring....
NERD RAGE!!!..
Ok, I can see why people might think its boring and miss the point, but Ive promised her I will watch a, in her world, 'real' horror movies, so I need recommendations for a fast paced, in your face movie with lots of cheap jump scares.
Im thinking either Dawn of the Dead (2004), Texas Chainsaw remake or The Descent, although the last one takes its sweet time to get to the scary part. Dont know wtf is wrong with me but I cant think of any recent movies with a good amount of jumpscares thats also good.
help me out

Re: Recommend a horror film
It's as much a spoof as a genuine horror, but it can get nicely creepy/weird: House (aka Hausu - Japanese 70s film, not the 80s American one) is awesome. Troll 2, of course, is a masterpiece.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Psycho 2 and The Exorcist III are the two scariest horror films I've seen. Blue Velvet is awesome as well, but I don't know if it belongs within the genre.

Get Inside. It's a French movie about a pregnant woman being attacked by a lunatic who wants to take the baby out of her. Seems like a good one to get the chicks squirming. Frontiers is another good French horror movie in the crazy family tradition of Texas Chainsaw Massacre that's worth watching.1up wrote:
