The majority of people on planet Earth consider any bullet hell game bizarre, so yeah.

Plus something about the way the sprites move around looks kind of cheesy, like a cheap freeware game (I realize this is one guy of course so I guess this is expected)

@SockPuppet:
Having huge anime girls pop in and out of the screen every few minutes is really bizarre, and if I recall correctly they all look 10 years old. I've played PCB and IN. Not too much, though.
You have an odd definition of bizarre and creepy. Either, that, or you're taking things too seriously. Take it easy.
Haha, no, I would say that the majority of people on planet Earth would define the TouHou games as bizarre.
Not in my experiences. For the most part, the first thing most people I've run into comment on is the amount of bullets on screen, not paying any mind to any characters that pop up. Of course, my concentration breaks and I die as soon as they say something, which is never a pleasant event.

Imperishable Night is still my favorite of the windows set, and this one seems to be on my favorite list also.
Imperishable Night is pretty good. I ordered it a couple of weeks ago, it just arrived today.

See? :o
You went out and bought it? UNHEARD OF!

I kid. Hell, I ended up taking it off of my computer because I wanted to buy an actual copy. Of course, I haven't done it yet, mainly because I need a new video card. The one I have right now can't run any of the windows games.
It didn't install perfectly on my computer for some odd reason, and the only BGM available was the MIDI soundtrack. A simple copypaste of the BGM data from my downloaded version, problem solved.

Also, there are very subtle differences between the version I just got and the version I downloaded. Some of the backgrounds vary in detail and color, and some of the graphics are ever-so-slightly different.

Yeah, that's actually my biggest complaint against Touhou. The "flatness" you're describing is a side effect of ZUN using only black and white to lighten/darken. (and since bullets=light, all bullets=90% white) It's sad, I like the Touhou games but honestly can't play them for too long at a time because the sameness makes my eyes tired.

I have to say the bullet patterns in Touhou 11 feel a lot more original to me than Touhou 10 did. I don't really have time to play even casually anymore, let alone attempt score attacking, but damned if it isn't a great waste of an hour.

Hey, good to see you're still around.

I imagine he's rolling in cash but he still sells his games for what, 1000yen a pop? Compared to anything on the commercial market over there, that's ... nothing.

I would say this is the peak of TouHou if Zun keeps going with this. Any harder and you would get the equivilent of Mushihimesama(sp?) with lolis and character ideas that was pulled out of the ass at the last moment.

A two tailed, Necromancing, cat girl with a butcher knife almost as big as her body: Awesome.

A living, nuclear reactor girl who plans on using a nuclear bomb to take over the world complete with a warning: SuperFuckulus.(which is good)

From the way I see it, the quality of TouHou games is going to to start to look not as good.

But I could be wrong.... maybe.

A wheelbarrow. With a totally screwed perspective, because ZUN fails at drawing.

Well let me totally derail this thread by saying that while I have liked the whole series, including MoF, I can't stand this one.

Partly that's because the weapons feel so underpowered, but the big thing that brings this game to a crashing halt for me is the level 2 boss. It just pisses me off. It breaks so many unbroken rules.

One of the biggest is that bullets are supposed to move. Instead of dodging attacks and weaving your way into attack position, you have to sit there and wait for a barrier of bullets to evaporate.

The other big rule it breaks is that if a boss in one of these games does make bullets appear around the playfield, that they don't spawn on top of the player. Here I'm fleeing from a trail of spawning points whose direction and speed are constantly in flux. Not to mention that after the couple precious seconds I spend shooting at the boss, I must now WAIT for these bullets to evaporate before I can put the pressure back on.

I also, for aesthetic reasons, hate her initial arrow-ring attack. The projectiles seem to be touching, I have to take advantage of the knowledge that the hitbox is smaller than the sprite, I just don't know how small. This same thing annoys me in rRootage.

Blech! Touhou games have had so-so bosses in the past, but never ones where I'm saying to myself, "When can we get this over with so I can get back to the fun stuff?" I like the level 3 boss and the nifty hesitating beam attacks of the regular enemies, not to mention the drunken unicorn boss not leaving the scene after her initial mini-scuffle, but I don't think I can stand playing that level 2 boss every single game. Arcade style game design is a double-edged sword and one bad level, especially in the beginning, can ruin the rest of the game. See also End Effector.

No, it's just extremely hypocritical and people bring it up too much. No one seems to understand that no one fucking cares.

Go bitch at like, Psikyo games or something. Those are professional. And they've got the same "problem" as Touhou games (actually, it's slightly worse)

On a random, totally unrelated note, I'm finding myself running the game in the background with the music room enabled more than the usual.

Dunno why people complained so much about the music, here I have the subwoofer working non-stop and ZUN remembered to actually add some bass lines and stage 5 theme has one of the coolest opening/ending melodies I heard in a while. It really grew on me and I place it next to the catchy Stage 3 themes.

I should really try to 1cc it in Normal... Damn Orin.

I'm doing the same thing, until DoujinStyle stops being lazy and uploads the GST. :p

And I liked the music! Parsee's theme, Satori's theme, Orin's theme, and Koishi's themes are my favorites, and Satori's is probably my new favorite overall! The rest didn't really stand out to me, though.

The imageboard has it. 2 loops+fade in/fadeout. Look at the music thread that Funkies keeps alive.

The amount of stuff in that thread is just breathtaking.

Word of warning: enter at your own risk... I really go there for the Music thread and sometimes the translation and request threads. The rest is your typical "lolzlolipornzdoujinfanonpowerlevel", those hideous heads and stuff mixed with a lot of opposite stuff, clashing with trolls and the likes. Typical of an imageboard?

Can't link you to the thread directly but search for it, should be at pages 0-1, has Yuyuko and Youmu as the starting image.

If you feel the imageboard is just too much for your sanity, check the same thread from DS. I somehow helped shaping a "I want Touhou orchestral music" club without noticing it, plus there is a heavy metal one and Funkies posts everything there too for people who dislike imageboards.

If you can ignore it... yes. It's not bad in that field but you get some idiots hijacking it all with those horrid heads mixed with guro (which is like japanese gore but elevated to 100+ in terms of creepiness and fugliness) Thus, and personally, not that worth the risk of burning your retinas.

Now and then you also get all the lesbianlolipornz etc etc and even links to a NSFW board fully dedicated to the matter. Such is the business?

So, back to SA, does anyone think we'll see a patch soon to address the horrid Extra Stage bug? I'm kinda refusing to attempt a real 1cc in Normal if I know that, later, the extra (a prize/slap to persistence) will be buggy.
