PC98XX

Post by MX7 »

I was in a bit of a Touhou frame of mind yesterday, so I decided to download the earlier, PC98 incarnations of the series, and an emulator to run them on. While the games were surprisingly fun, I completely fell in love with the PC98 sound chip more than anything else. I was wondering if anyone could recommend me some games with awesome music on the PC98? I know there were lots of Falcom games made for it, for example, and they always seem to be a safe pair of hands in the tune department.

Alternatively (or even preferably), I understand that people (ie Japanese computer nerds) are still making albums using the PC98 sound chip. If anyone could point me in the direction of any information or files regarding this, I would be very happy indeed :)

The music in Yu-No is awesome.

Anyway, PC98 games I recommend:

Briganty
Night Slave
Edge
Xak 3
Popful Mail
Brandish 3
Sorcer Kingdom
Wasureenu Honou Ardor Aeternus
Dragon Knight 3
Dragon Knight 4
Words Worth
Dark Seraphim
Tamashii no Mon

The list goes on and on and on and on and on...... too much good stuff on pc98.

Here is the best pc98 english community site: http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/

If you just want to browse screenshots of most pc98 games go here: http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/screen/a.html

If you want disc images of these games, have a look at the forum on the site

By the way, the PC88 series is another old Japanese PC platform with just as many thousands of games as the PC98, and music capabilities just as awesome.

Yes, Yu-No is great! The composer recently registered an account on my forum and uploaded this awesome song: http://www.soundshock.se/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=261

Manabu Saito and Toshiya Yamanaka also made some great soundtracks for the PC98 computer series.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's going to take me a fair while to wade through what I've found so far, but there's some really cool stuff on this system.

I've never seen so many breasts in one day...

Yes.

PC98 is excellent. I'll recommend just about anything from Falcom on both systems, but there are some amazing, AMAZING shmups on 88 and 98. Flame Zapper is great fun.

Been playing a lot of Flame Zapper Kotsujin. Beautiful graphics, amazing soundtrack, and altogether one of the best shooters I have played in a long time.

For some reason I have a PC-FX GA, the PC-9801 model.

No 9801 though.

Some of those games have identical versions on MSX (Or at least they seem identical on the screenshots), yet some games look damn amazing to be done on the MSX.

I think it was the PC-88 that was a lot like the MSX machines?
