STGT 2008 - Week #1 Voting (Capcom Week)

Post by sikraiken »

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST

PLAY ALL THE GAMES FIRST BEFORE VOTING.

The Voting deadline for week #1 is Monday, August 25th at 10:59AM GMT.
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/

Voting is a little different this time around. Voting is completely private. Here's what you need to do.

Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the following required things:
- Your forum name
- What game you are voting for

While this is not required, please also add:
- WHY you are voting for the game you are voting for (your reason will not change the qualification of your vote, I'm just interested in seeing why people are voting for the game they choose. "I like this game" is not a reason, you can do better than that. "I like/chose this game because..." If you have trouble writing english, feel free to write in your native language.)

After you have sent a vote, you may not change your vote. You do not have to vote if you do not want to. You may not vote for other players (this includes team mates). Your vote only counts if you send it to the e-mail address above. You must be part of STGT2008 to participate in voting. DO NOT PM me your votes.

I will be checking the votes two hours before the deadline. I will not be opening the e-mail account and looking at the votes before then. If there happens to be a tie (or one vote difference) at that point when I check them, I will announce that and extend the voting period for two more hours, allowing anyone who has not voted to have a chance to vote. I will not announce what games they are. Once there is a clear winner, the game will be announced.

Thread discussion:

DO NOT:
-Do not talk about what game(s) you are going to vote for or game(s) you are not going to vote for in this thread.
-Do not talk about what game(s) you might vote for in this thread.
-DO NOT STATE YOUR VOTE IN THIS THREAD.
(I hope this makes it clear what you should NOT talk about in this thread).

DO:
-Do ask questions about voting in general.
-Do ask questions you have about any of the games ("Why does this game suck?" is not an acceptable question, however.)
-Do ask any questions you have about the tournament.
-Do discuss anything that doesn't have to do with liking/disliking one of the game selections.
-Feel free to talk about your votes with your team outside of this thread (outside of this board).

Game Selection:

1943 Kai: Midway Kaisen

Image
Shooting down the bosses for 100% gets you more points. There is a 1M bonus for completing the game. Shotgun makes bullets disappear. Power-ups can be changed by shooting the power up item for rotation. Bomb takes life away. 10 stages. (~30min for completion)

19XX: The War Against Destiny

Image
Three planes to choose from. End of level bonuses for shooting down 100% enemies (also increases your score by increasing your 'rank' (rank is not difficulty here)), bonus for speed killing bosses, bonus for medals and bombs. 300k per life at the end of the game. Power-up changes as it floats around the screen. 7 stages. (~30min for completion)

Varth - Operation Thunderstorm (World/US)

Image
Fixed or smart pods to choose from. Do not play the japanese version (it has level restart). Hidden point items on the ground, bonus for not grabbing pod item, 100k per life at the end of the game. End of stage bonuses. Power-up item for plane shot does not change (there are three different ones). You can wiggle your joystick left and right to speed up your bomb recovery. 30 stages. (~60min for completion)

Will autofire be allowed in the tournament?

If so can you recommend which version of MAME to use or what program to use.

I though 19xx was a vertizontal. Now I see that it is a vertical XXXL-- something I've never seen before.

Yeah, it will be.

I use wolfmame 106. http://wolfmame.marpirc.net/wolfmameplus-0106.exe
I think it's based off of mame32plus originally. I'd tell you to just use mame32plus but it's just mameplus now I think (no gui?).

You might be thinking of 1944.

If Varth wins can we use xpadder/joy2key/autohotkey to auto left+right?

Which versions of 1943 Kai and Varth are on Capcom Classics Collections 1 and 2 respectively? And if they're the right versions, is it acceptable to play using CCC (I'd be using the PS2 game, but it also exists for XBox and PSP) instead of MAME?
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I was also going to ask if the CCC version of 1943 Kai was acceptable.

That would be 1944: The Loop Master you're thinking of. LOTS OF BREATHING ROOM!

I use wolfmame 0.99, because I hear Cave games have .inp problems with later versions (of any type of mame?) and I know that someone will want me to use it. (And Prometheus was so nice to upload it)

afaik, it is based off mame+, and I think it has both a command line and a gui version now. That's what it usually has. Then again, I've never downloaded a mame32+.

afaik, there's only one 1943 Kai for the arcades. As for Varth, check to see if you restart from a checkpoint whenever you die. If so, it's the wrong version. (Well, I don't have CCC)

If CCC is anything like CCC2, you'll get 4 frames of input lag.

just sayin'

Question about 19XX: The War Against Destiny.

Besides fighting a huge spanish battleship (¡Viva el Sancho Pedro, che!), I'm wondering a couple of things: does this game have autofire?

Second: the lock-on system, how does that thing exactly works?

How long do I need to hold the button to release the orb/thing/hook used to launch the missiles? Holding the fire button longer offers any increased effect whatsoever?

No internal autofire. The marker you set by charging your shot is the lock-on system. After you tag something, you'll fire homing shots at it, while shooting normally. There is no benefit to charging up longer.

This thread is helpful:

No one has these? I used to have them, but I sold them and don't want to repurchase if these are the wrong versions.

Varth on the North American release of CCC2 restarts you where you die. That means it's the US version and we can use it, right?

If 1943kai or Varth were chosen, CCC could be used. If Varth were chosen and you don't have the US version, you would need to make sure that the game continues from where you die. I'm going to guess that the JP version of CCC restarts the level, though. That wouldn't be allowed.

Interesting coincidence: The newest MAME (.127, released today I think) has ROM updates for both 1943 (almost all the 194X series games, besides 44 and XX) and Varth.

"Updated cps1 to use proper gfx ROMs (+ PALs) for varthj, and to load
correct A-Board PALs for QSound games."

"Added information to the 1943 driver (video) about priorities encoded
in PROM."

These aren't important, 1943 isn't even a rom change (is varthj even?). There are no other updates for any of the other 194x games. Interesting coincidence, sure? :D

Button auto is fine, but directional auto will not be ok.

To my Oldschoolers team buddies: (read: "question about voting in general")

I've already made up my mind for this week but it would be also interesting to hear two cents from teammembers. So let's chat via PM if you want. I won't cast my vote until Monday anyway. :)
