new article 'Smartbombs in Bullet Hell'

Post by racter »

heyawl -

a few months ago i stopped by asking for suggestions for crazy/awesome smartbomb explosions in japanese shmups. thanks for all your help!

here's the original thread in case you're curious: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=19320

the article i was working on is now published in the first issue of 'A Quarterly Journal of Art and Culture'. a pdf version of the journal is available for free on their website:
http://www.quarterlyartjournal.com/

and here's a direct link to the pdf for download:
http://www.quarterlyartjournal.com/issu ... preads.pdf

the 'bullet hell' article is around page 15 of the pdf.

this issue of 'quarterly journal' is called 'Explosions'. lots of interesting stuff in there!

thanks again!

You mislabeled the DonPachi pictures, but other than that, I think what you wrote was FANTASTIC. Feels like something that should be published, and maybe everyone, even if they don't try the genre, can at least learn something new about an aspect of the genre.

From Wikipedia:
The game takes place in an alternate reality based on World War II, and, in a controversial twist, players control German-speaking characters with uniforms that resemble those of the Nazi SS.
I've not played the game; I googled out of sheer curiosity. Meh. [/quote]

Yes. You didn´t notice the german voiceovers?

And nice work, racter. I always smile when I see videogame related stuff in a more serious cultural context. One time I was in the Hamburg modern art museum and sitting in a small room was a PC running Quake with a custom level that looked like the actual museum it was in. It had all the paitings and objects in it, but I can´t recall if it had any enemies. I remember thinking "Hell yeah, this is what I´m talking about!" And the same thing runs to my mind when I go through the PDF you made. I always thought that it is my duty as an illustration student to be more interested in modern cultural avantgarde, but I gave up kidding myself some time ago

"Dodonpachi - the title is meant to evoke the sound of gunfire" is a great line. It´s a bit of a shame that you didn´t have more space; there are so many other great smartbombs. A huge collage would have been great, too.

I never actually played it, but their uniforms, the WWII-theme and the german voices in the game gave me that impression (from watching replays). On the other hand, the japanese seem to love to use german words, Einhänder for instance (with their "Volksgasmaske" billboards in the first stage), the "Verboten!" runesword in Symphony Of The Night, and a lot more stuff. It´s not that I actually care much for speculations like that

it is better than nothing....but in my experience, especially when it comes to foreign stuff, there is often misinformation and speculation on the part of the writer....

take the nazi interpretation of the writer of the under defeat piece.....ive never heard that connection anywhere.....i dont think this is a fact.......this is speculation on the part of the writer.....

im just pointing out that just because its on wikipedia doesnt mean its fact or that the writer is properly informed about the subject......

and now in that guys article people are gonna read it and think under defeat is a game about nazis......which it isnt

but either way....im done cluttering up this guys thread....

***BACK ON TOPIC***

i still enjoyed the article none the less
