Don't worry, I have played them all. Only the C64 version of Katakis though.Ceph wrote:"God help me keep my ignorance."
Apidya. Z-Out. Katakis.
Now go to your room.
The WORST Shooter you have ever played...
Where did I say said games are the worst I have ever played? I said German made games in general, meaning that I think most of those games exhibit something that is typically German and that I find dull and boring. If there really exists such a thing as a German mentality when it comes to shmups is up for debate though. Certainly it would be part of a larger European mentality that have people bowing down before R-type (and to a lesser extent Nemesis) as if it was the be all and end all of shmups. It's the same thing here in Norway too. I will admit that I find danmaku's equally boring.

The worst shooters. You said so here:320x240 wrote:Where did I say said games are the worst I have ever played?
Since you said you have played Apidya, Z-Out and Katakis which are German, they are ipso facto the worst you ever played.320x240 wrote:Worst shooter I have ever played? The German made ones...
That's an inane generalization.320x240 wrote:I said German made games in general, meaning that I think most of those games exhibit something that is typically German and that I find dull and boring.
PS.
I can think of lots of German games that are fun: The Turrican series, Giana Sisters, The Settlers, Chambers of Shaolin, Wings of Death, Lionheart...
No, it's simply a generalization. I find a well delivered generalization to be an excellent starting point for a discussion. Especially at this day and age when the art of dialectics have gone completely out of fashion.Ceph wrote:That's an inane generalization.
I never said Germans can't make good games. I have only talked about shmups. That said, out of the games you mention I only find Giana Sisters to be fun. Lionheart looks good though. Thalions best game where No Second Prize. That was a very good game.Ceph wrote:PS.

I think the Worst shmup i've ever played, if you can even call it one, is Dark Star for the c64 by MasterTronic. (European game originally)
You have to get to the end of one single long level with randomly placed enemies which can kill you cheaply if you have bad luck. You are killed by wall collisions as well. You only have one life. And, to add insult to injury, the paths diverge into dead ends with only one path correct. MANY TIMES.
Not only that but after the first 3 or four divisions you have to snake through paths barely wide enough for your ship to fit though to cross over to the proper side of the screen to avoid a crash!
they are perfect diagonals. the screen auto scrolls one character block at a time. theres barely enough time to move one character blocks width in one frame. SO it requires pixel perfect timing just to get through one of those crossovers. And of course you don't get a map. youhave to memorize the path through. and do it without getting killed cheaply by an enemy ramming you from the side as you come out of a crossover.

I don't think GP2 looks that bad...I mean, it still plays the same as the first only with 3D.unsane wrote:Possibly some more food for the sadists, via shmup.com's Hall of Shame:

I can think of a lot of shmups that didn't do anything for me. Games like Twin Bee Yahoo!, Batrider... shmups that I just didn't like, and felt that they were flawed or just a knock off of a better game. However, this isn't about game's we don't like... it's about ones that suck.
Vertical= Divine Sealing (MegaDrive)- I don't know what the story is for this game, or why clothing just seems to fall off of the women in the cinemas, but it's just bad. Bad sounds, bad music, bad graphics, bad gameplay... bad bad bad. Even The Earth Defend has a quirky charm with it's simplicity, but DS is just a plastic turd.
Horizontal= R-Type III: The Third Lightning (GBA)- Even XDR on the MegaDrive is better than this game, as at least XDR is playable. The port of the SNES classic is botched on virtually every level. The music is broken, the graphics are glitchy, the hit detection is atrocious, and thanks to the playing area being noticeably smaller, it's basically impossible to get past one of the later levels without cheating. It's a shame such a great SNES, was turned into this.

I feel the same way, although I wouldn't rank this one of the worst games eithergennss wrote:Mars Matrix.
Its ugly, its boring, and if can survive long enough makes me wonder why the hell i bothered.
Can't be as bad as that one Euroshmup (I think it starts with a P).The Coop wrote:Horizontal= R-Type III: The Third Lightning (GBA)- Even XDR on the MegaDrive is better than this game, as at least XDR is playable.
