Shmup bosses you absolutely HATE!!

Post by EddyMRA »

These shmup bosses give me fits every time I face them. No matter how many times I fight against them, I always fall victim to their vicious attacks.

Phase 2 Super Tank Boss (Raiden Fighters Jet): I absolutely hate this bastard! It moves so fast around the screen, while spraying bullet streams all over the place. I may use the Raiden mk-II or the Ixion, it doesn't matter. This guy always kills me at least once.

Red Eye (Raiden Fighters 2/Jet): Another tough boss. It shoots some nasty attack patterns, and there's even a pinwheel-type attack which requires you to circle all the way around the boss to avoid!

Geo-Bite (Strikers 1945 III): Three words: INSTANT DEATH LASERS.

Uzura and Misago (Ikaruga): I suck at Ikaruga, and the Chapters 3 and 4 bosses kick my ass. Uzura's rotating turrets pattern still throw me off, especially when it decides to start shooting black and white lasers from its central hub. Misago is a nightmare for me. It shoots alternating black/white electric beams with a large core to avoid. Still haven't gotten that one down.

Icing Gun Boss (Gokujyou Parodius): An extremely annoying boss. It takes forever to kill without the right weapons, and sometimes I miss its cue it's going to rush me instead of bouncing lasers off its icing attack.

Spider Boss (Gradius V): I hate this boss. I can never get the timing right when it launces its explosive orange blobs at me. The interval between each blob changes with rank, so I have no sense in the timing.

Blue Optomon (The Guardian Legend): This boss is one of the worst to fight given all the items you can find in the game at that point. Its chain attack is devastating; colliding with it knocks off 8 full units of energy from your shield reserves! The worst part is that it sometimes rapid fires some FAST chains, which you have almost no time to react!

Stage 5 Boss (Raiden II): The little boss released fires some random spam which usually kills me.

I know of at least one person's most despised boss: Landshark and the Sexy Parodius incarnation of Eagle Satake.
The age of Alluro and JudgeSpear is over.

Einhander - stage 5 boss. the machine-gun attack where you have to reduce speed and slowly move upward (or downward) to avoid took some getting used to, but then it has that obnoxious attack where it throws out a few triangles and they all send homing bullets at you. by far the cheapest attack in the game.

Psyvariar 2 - stage 4 boss. of the 3 forms, the first was the most annoying... i have yet to 1CC the game, but that boss always takes the finishing chunk out of me if i 1-credit my way to that point.

Darius Twin - the final walrus-inside-a-lanternfish boss. an otherwise disappointingly easy final boss, though the homing bullets were a pain.

Dragon Spirit - stage 4 (graveyard) boss. that zombie dragon thing is in my nightmares now... it goes from being no challenge whatsoever to manic-level when it spazzes out and sends all those... things... at you. o_O

Gradius IV - stage 3 boss. an otherwise simple "destroy the core" boss, if it weren't for the dozens of bubbles floating around.

Espgaluda - final boss, final form. screen literally full of bullets... not so hard once you get the patterns and rythm down. but the fact that your charge shot HEALS it... hooo, i remember finding that out the hard way...

G-Darius - Absolute Defender. i think that's what it's called... lanternfish with a force-field. just ungodly obnoxious.

Trizeal: Stage 5 boss. This thing is pure evil and surprisingly much tougher than the final boss. Those yellow boomerangs always seem to get me. I have never managed to beat him without using at least three bombs, which, of course, is not acceptable.

DonPachi: Stage 4 boss. It's not that I hate the entire boss fight, but the attack where the huge pink spheres start to follow you is very nasty. Especially if you're playing with the sloooow C-type ship.

I found that if you get in this perfect spot at the bottom a little offcenter all of the attacks will miss you.

Oddly enough, as much as I suck, there aren't any bosses that really bother me. It's the levels that do me in.

heh... i managed to do that a couple of times. *laughs* but the sheer number of panels the first form has usually does me in on my 1-credit campaign. yay for sweet-spots, though. ^_^

Gradius V - Stage 6, 2nd boss (I think). The ball that rolls around the rectangular room. It's not even hard really, just goddamn impossible with type 4. I time up every single time I try to beat it with type 4. I guess that's what I get for being a lazy ass and using type 4. :?

i hate the stage 4 bio-hazard battle boss that continually picks up pieces of the scenery and hurls it at you as well as using it to defend itself. there always seems to be too many bullets to keep track of for a hori too. then again i suck at horis lol.

the stage 4 boss on strikers 1945 part 2. doesn't matter which bitch turns up for the fight, i almost always struggle with on section of the bullet patterns. however i reserve my most hatred for the rotational patterns that are so tight that almost pure luck will get you through if nothing else. i've now submitted and will use a bomb or two to get past any bits that are likely to destroy me. but......

I hate R-Type's level four boss. Don't know why, just seems very prone to making stupid mistakes on that one.

Ikaruga stage 3. This is the difference between super-players and mere mortals like myself, because to me this is absolutely fuckin impossible to do on one life. And believe me I've tried. In fact, that entire level fucks me every time.

And every boss on Radiant Silvergun and Border Down. Seriously, I'm utter shit at both.

The little wall core in Sexy Parodius...

I didn't exactly hate it, but it made go 'WTF?!'
When you kill 3, then it turns to 5 cores, and then it turns to 7 and it turns to 12 (THAT part made me go 'WTF')

I don't know if it's that amount, but this is based on what I remember. :/

It wouldn't be all that bad if you had more than 3 seconds to beat it.

Strikers 1999: Geo Bite. Incredibly cheap boss once those lasers start up.

Dragon Blaze: Last boss. I hate him. I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him.

Gunbird: The 1-6 boss, dragon form. Always gets me.

Gradius 3: 1-3 boss (big core mkIII?). Never made it past it.

Gradius 2: The boss of the boss-rush (big sphere with missles flying in from the top and bottom).

Dimahoo: Final boss. Talk about cheap. He's got a few spreadshots that are nearly impossible to dodge. Even the superplays I've watched had them bombing during these points. The fact that he can make his bullets reverse in time and go backwards makes it all the more difficult (although that part is quite cool).

Madzella (Batsugun): I think I hate this guy more because he's a level 2 boss than anything else. Deep Purple is almost no problem, and then this sonuvagun shows up the very next stage...in his initial "airplane" form he jerks back and forth rapidly whenever you blow a piece off of him, throwing the screen off and making it tougher to dodge his patterns...once he's in "pod" form not only does he toss near-impossible-to-dodge spam in front of him as he forces you into a wall, but has lots of annoying little helpers to mess things up even more. I don't have half as much trouble with Mad Steel Darkness (stage 3 boss) as I do with this guy. I usually have to bomb at least twice when I fight him.

Stage 10 Boss (Space Megaforce): He's just a pumped-up version of the level 1 boss, but those semi-homing barrel mines that he tosses down the middle of the screen make this battle infinitely more difficult than the first one. No other boss in the game gives me as much grief as this one does.

Stage 3 Tank Boss (Soukyugurentai): I think everyone hates this guy...another big jump in difficulty from the boss before him, and even compared to bosses after him. Lots of nasty attacks, tough to lock on to effectively, takes forever to kill. Iusually end up settling for the 1/4 point total against him.

Ikaruga stage 3. This is the difference between super-players and mere mortals like myself, because to me this is absolutely fuckin impossible to do on one life. And believe me I've tried. In fact, that entire level fucks me every time.
oh geez... i forgot about Ikaruga's bosses. XD i guess i had the mindset of "everyone hates the level 3 & 4 bosses, so that goes without saying." but yeah... level 3's boss is a bitch, and the entire next level ain't much better. :/

and yes... the whole 4th stage of R-Type always kicks my ass. i still can't get past that damn boss..... >_>

One that I LOVE to HATE:

R-Type II level 4 boss.
The one retreating at top speed down the crowded corridor while shooting missles and such at you. That one almost makes my heart stop.

I play Type 4 and that boss is definitely doable, though frustrating at times. This boss can be challenging because there's no real way to take advantage of your rotational/consolidational ability; this strategy could be used with other option types as well.

As the ball rolls, don't rotate your options; drag them around the parimeter of the room, far enough away from the walls so that they overlap with the core. This takes a lot of practice, but if you can time it right so that one of your options can line up with the core as it makes its way around, you can do a lot of damage without having to knock out the shields.

When it starts bouncing around, you can use the same sort of technique or consolidate them over your ship to destroy the shields and work at the core from the sides.

Personally, I find the series of bosses at the end of stage 7 to be quite a challenge. Even the walker at the very end, which looks really easy, gives me a hard time. I probably just need some more practice and I'll get it.

Yeah, same here. Bullets galore! But it sure is pretty to look at though. :) Also, the last boss in Giga Wing was pretty damn tough. That coin is a little bitch!

EINHANDER: The very last boss handed my ass to me a few times before I actually killed it. Still, one of the best looking boss battles ever for a PSX shmup.

GRADIUS V: I cannot get passed that 3rd stage boss!

DODONPACHI: The final "head" boss, after the Queen Bee, is rediculously hard. It always takes me around 5 minutes to kill that bastard. Plus the fact that you're bombs have no effect at all and you have to shoot him to death while trying to dodge those screen-filling bullets.......

CHAOS FIELD: The final boss is super confusing. Even more confusing than Ikaruga's, IMO. I still haven't beaten it.

BORDER DOWN: Everytime I reach the stage 6 boss I pray I have enough
lives left to get through it, and I have failed numerous times. Defintely one of the hardest bosses out there.

Ikuraga - Stage 4 Boss. I never feel like I have enough room to manuever and I almost always run out of time without destroying it.

Espgaluda - The final form of the last boss. It throws a ton bullets at you and is invulnerable to your gaurd barrier attack and slow mode attack, which is rather annoying.

I am a lazy ass too and using type-4 as well, but I have no problem whatsoever with Rolling Core. All you need is spending more time on this boss and find its weakness.

Thunder Force V - The Boss before you fight the Guardian (Fatherless baby I think its called) I have a hard time beating this headless body without losing most of my weapons, leaving me naked to face the Guardian him self! What a bastid!
I still havent mastered him nor the Guardian.

Ketsui - Stage 3 midboss (the big Battleship): I don't know why, but the final pattern where it sprays the huge red and blue bullets in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions just TOTALLY throws me off. Not to mention you're getting harassed by mini-battleships and popcorn enemies at the same time. Ironically, I can easily take the main boss for this stage, and I even fare will against Stage 4's boss. This one is just so damn hard for me though....

Battle Bakraid - Stage "Cloud", boss "Gigamanta": For some reason I cannot survive the pattern where it shoots the fan of bullets, then closes it so the spacing becomes narrower. I'm never in the right spot, and I always die. Also, the boss rush beforehand is a pain, I manage to die at least once during it as well.

Batrider - Every boss after stage 2: don't EVEN get me started on this bitch :x
